Integration into the NX Series Safety System

The Omron NX-SIH400 is a high-performance safety input unit designed for the NX series I/O system. It is a fundamental component of the Omron Sysmac safety platform, which allows for the integration of safety and standard control on the same network. The NX-SIH400 is responsible for monitoring safety sensors such as emergency stop buttons, safety light curtains, and door switches. By using Fail-Safe over EtherCAT (FSoE), it transmits safety data securely to an NX-series safety controller.

Hardware Specifications and Input Logic

The NX-SIH400 features 4 high-speed safety input channels. These inputs are designed to detect even the briefest signal changes, ensuring a rapid response to safety events. The unit supports both single-channel and dual-channel input configurations, allowing it to meet different safety integrity levels (up to SIL 3 and PL e). It also includes built-in test pulse outputs to monitor for cross-circuits and wiring faults in the field sensors, providing a high level of diagnostic coverage.

FSoE and Network Communication

Communication between the NX-SIH400 and the safety controller is handled via the EtherCAT network using the FSoE protocol. This protocol adds a safety layer on top of the standard EtherCAT communication, ensuring that safety data is transmitted without corruption or delay. This architecture allows safety I/O units to be distributed throughout the machine, reducing the amount of cabling required compared to traditional hard-wired safety systems while maintaining high-speed performance.

Diagnostic Capabilities and Status Monitoring

Effective maintenance is facilitated by the extensive diagnostic features of the NX-SIH400. Each input channel has a dedicated status LED on the front panel, providing immediate visual feedback on the state of the safety devices. Internally, the unit monitors for power supply fluctuations, internal hardware failures, and communication errors. Detailed diagnostic information is available to the safety controller and can be displayed on an HMI, allowing for quick identification and resolution of safety-related issues.

Compact Design and Modular Expansion

Like all NX series modules, the NX-SIH400 features a slim, space-saving design with a width of only 12mm. It utilizes a push-in Plus terminal block for fast and reliable wiring without the need for tools. The modular nature of the NX system allows the NX-SIH400 to be combined with standard I/O units on the same coupler, providing a highly flexible and scalable solution for machine builders. This modularity ensures that the safety system can be easily expanded or modified as machine requirements evolve.
