Product Overview
The National Instruments PXIe-8301 is a remote control module for PXI Express systems. It allows a PXIe chassis to be controlled from a laptop or desktop computer through a Thunderbolt 3 connection. The module is designed for engineers who need the modularity and performance of PXI Express while keeping the host computer separate from the measurement chassis.
The PXIe-8301 is especially useful in portable test systems, bench top validation setups, and multi chassis configurations. By using Thunderbolt 3 cabling, the module supports a clean separation between the host computer and the PXIe hardware. This can improve physical arrangement in a test rack and make it easier to upgrade or replace the host computer without changing the measurement chassis.
Thunderbolt 3 Connectivity
The module provides two Thunderbolt 3 ports. One port connects to the host computer, and the second port can be used to daisy chain additional Thunderbolt 3 devices or another PXIe chassis. Thunderbolt 3 offers high bandwidth and low latency, which supports responsive control of PXI Express instruments and modules. The interface is well suited to data intensive applications such as high speed digitizing, RF measurement, and multi channel data acquisition.
The PXIe-8301 uses a PCI Express Gen3 x4 link to the PXIe backplane. This architecture provides a direct and efficient path between the host and the PXIe modules. The result is a remote control solution that feels close to an embedded controller in many test and measurement workflows.
Multi Chassis and Daisy Chain Use
With two Thunderbolt 3 ports, the PXIe-8301 supports daisy chain configurations. A host computer can connect to one PXIe chassis, and that chassis can pass the connection to another compatible Thunderbolt 3 device or chassis. This helps engineers expand channel count or mix different PXIe chassis types without adding a separate host computer for each chassis.
Daisy chain operation is useful in large test systems where space is limited and cable routing must be simple. It also supports staged system expansion, allowing a test bench to grow as measurement requirements increase. The module is designed to work with supported PXI Express chassis and host systems that provide Thunderbolt 3 connectivity.
Portable and Bench Top Test Systems
Because the PXIe-8301 allows a laptop to control a PXIe chassis, it supports portable test configurations that are easier to move and set up than embedded controller systems. Engineers can use a laptop for field service, on site validation, or laboratory work while still using PXIe instruments for high quality measurements.
On a bench top, the module helps separate the user interface and data processing computer from the measurement hardware. This can reduce clutter around the device under test and make it easier to access front panel connections. It also allows the host computer to be placed in a more convenient location for the operator.
Software and Integration
The PXIe-8301 is supported by NI PXI Platform Services and standard NI measurement and automation software. Once the chassis and module are detected, PXIe instruments can be configured and programmed in the same way as other PXI Express systems. LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, Measurement Studio, and NI-DAQmx based applications can use the remote chassis as part of the test system.
The module works with PXI Express timing and synchronization features available in the chassis. Trigger lines, clocks, and module to module communication remain available within the PXIe backplane, while the host connection is handled over Thunderbolt 3. This allows tight coordination between instruments even when the host computer is outside the chassis.
Typical Applications
Laptop control of PXI Express measurement systems
Portable or field test setups that require PXIe instrumentation
Multi chassis test systems using Thunderbolt 3 daisy chaining
Bench top validation and research laboratories
Systems where the host computer must be separated from the PXIe chassis
The PXIe-8301 provides a practical remote control path for PXI Express systems. Its Thunderbolt 3 ports, daisy chain support, and PCIe Gen3 x4 backplane link make it suitable for portable, expandable, and high bandwidth test configurations.
