The Parker HPD2S2N is a compact, two-axis servo drive from the HPD (High Performance Drive) series, manufactured by Parker Hannifin’s Electromechanical Automation Division. This drive provides precise torque, velocity, and position control for brushless AC servo motors. It is designed for demanding industrial applications such as robotics, packaging machinery, pick-and-place systems, and CNC machine tools. The HPD2S2N features digital signal processor (DSP) control, auto-tuning, and a variety of feedback options including incremental encoders, absolute encoders, and resolvers.
The HPD2S2N operates on a three-phase input voltage of 200-240 VAC or 380-480 VAC (selectable via internal configuration). Each axis provides a continuous output current of 10 A RMS and a peak current of 30 A for 2 seconds. The drive is rated for motors up to 2 kW per axis. The internal DC bus voltage is regulated, and a built-in braking transistor is provided for external resistor connection. The switching frequency is 8 kHz (default, adjustable to 16 kHz for lower audible noise).

| Continuous Current | 10 A RMS |
| Peak Current | 30 A (2 seconds) |
| Output Power | Up to 2 kW |
| Control Modes | Torque, velocity, position, electronic gearing |
| Feedback | Incremental encoder (TTL or sin/cos), resolver, absolute |
| Communication | CANopen (DS402), RS-232, optional EtherCAT |
The HPD2S2N uses a 32-bit floating-point DSP with a current loop update rate of 31.25 µs (32 kHz) and velocity/position loop update rates of 125 µs (8 kHz). The drive supports multiple control algorithms: PI with feedforward for velocity, PID with feedforward for position. Auto-tuning measures the motor inertia and automatically sets gains for optimal response. The drive also features advanced filters: notch filter (up to 5 filters) for mechanical resonance suppression, low-pass filter, and adaptive vibration suppression. Position resolution with a 20-bit encoder is 0.00034 degrees.
Standard communication includes RS-232 (for configuration and single-drive control) and CANopen (CiA 402 profile) for multi-axis systems. The CANopen interface supports PDO and SDO messaging, synchronous and asynchronous operation. Optional fieldbus modules include EtherCAT, Profibus DP, and DeviceNet. The drive can be integrated into a Parker motion controller network or used as a standalone axis with analog command (±10V) or step/direction inputs. A built-in oscilloscope function allows recording of motion traces via the Parker Motion Manager software.
The HPD2S2N provides 8 digital inputs (24 VDC, programmable for limit switches, enable, home, etc.), 4 digital outputs (24 VDC, 100 mA), and 2 analog inputs (12-bit, ±10V) for torque or speed command. It includes a Safe Torque Off (STO) function certified to SIL2 and PL d, which disables the power stage without removing supply voltage. The drive also features a brake control output (24 VDC, 0.5 A) for motor holding brakes.

The HPD2S2N is housed in a rugged metal chassis rated IP20. Dimensions: 300mm (H) x 100mm (W) x 200mm (D). Weight: 3.5 kg. Operating temperature: 0°C to 50°C (derate above 40°C), storage -20°C to 70°C. Humidity: 10% to 90% non-condensing. Cooling is via forced air (internal fan). The drive meets CE, UL, and RoHS standards. It is designed for installation in a control cabinet with minimum clearance of 50 mm above and below.
Setup is performed using Parker’s Motion Manager software (Windows-based) via RS-232 or CANopen. The software provides a graphical interface for motor selection, tuning (including autotuning and manual gain adjustment), and I/O configuration. It also includes a scope function for real-time data capture. Parameters can be saved to the drive’s non-volatile memory. For multi-axis systems, the software can manage up to 254 drives on a CANopen network.
The HPD2S2N is used in: dual-axis gantry systems (X-Y tables), robotic arms (joint control), packaging machines (flying shear, indexing), CNC routers (spindle and axis control), and conveyor synchronization. The two-axis design reduces cabinet space compared to two single-axis drives. The STO function allows integration into safety circuits without external contactors.
Order number: HPD2S2N (base unit without fieldbus option). Accessories include: mating connectors (power, motor, feedback, I/O), external braking resistor, and configuration cable (RS-232). Parker provides a 1-year warranty. The HPD series has been discontinued; however, documentation and spare parts are still available through Parker distributors. For new designs, consider the Parker AC30 series or Compax3.
