Pillar AB6406-11A Power Control Board - PC Board for Industrial Power Systems
The Pillar AB6406-11A (also referenced as AB640611A) is a printed circuit board designed as a power control module for Pillar industrial power supplies and associated PLC add-on assemblies. It is typically used in high-frequency induction heating systems, DC power supplies, or as a regulator card in motor control centers. The board manages thyristor (SCR) firing, voltage regulation, current limiting, and fault detection. It interfaces with a host PLC via discrete I/O signals or an analog interface (0-10V, 4-20mA).
Electrical Characteristics
Supply Voltage: 24 VDC (nominal, 18–30 V range) or ±15 VDC for analog sections
Current Consumption: 250 mA at 24 VDC
Control Outputs: 6 isolated gate drive signals (15 V, 0.5 A) for SCRs/IGBTs
Analog Inputs: 4 channels (0-10V or 4-20mA) for setpoint and feedback
Digital Inputs: 8 optoisolated (24 VDC) for enable, reset, mode select
Digital Outputs: 4 relay outputs (30 VDC/250 VAC, 2A) for status and alarms
Physical and PCB Specifications
The PCB is a 4-layer FR4 board measuring 220 mm × 160 mm. It includes a large ground plane and thermal relief for high-current traces (up to 10A). The board is coated with a conformal lacquer for protection against dust and humidity. Connectors: 2x 20-pin header for backplane bus, 1x 26-pin ribbon cable for I/O interface, and a 3-pin terminal block for power input. It has test points for voltage monitoring and a potentiometer for calibration. Weight: 0.3 kg.
Protection and Diagnostics
On-board protections include overcurrent (threshold adjustable via trimmer), overvoltage (crowbar), and over-temperature (thermistor with latch). A red LED indicates fault, green LED indicates power-on, and yellow LED for gate drive activity. The board also has a watchdog circuit that shuts down outputs if the CPU (on a companion board) stops toggling a heartbeat signal.
Compatibility
The AB6406-11A is a direct replacement for Pillar AB6406-10A and is used in Pillar MK8 and MK10 series induction power supplies. It can also be deployed as a standalone PLC expansion board when used with a converter interface (Pillar part number AB6406-ADP). The board communicates via discrete signals; for networked control, an external communication gateway is required.
Applications
Typical installations include induction heating systems for forging, brazing, and annealing, as well as high-power DC rectifiers for electroplating. The board can be integrated with any PLC that provides 0-10V analog output for power setpoint and reads digital OK/FAULT signals. For proper operation, the board must be mounted in a clean, dry cabinet with adequate airflow (minimum 50 LFM).
