Omron R7D-APA3H 30W SmartStep Servo Drive for 200V AC Systems

The Omron R7D-APA3H is a 30W SmartStep series servo drive designed for 200V AC input. This compact drive provides precise position, speed, and torque control for small servo motors. It is compatible with Omron’s SmartStep motors and also supports Yaskawa motors with similar specifications. The drive features a pulse train interface for direct connection to PLC positioning modules, making it ideal for compact motion control applications.

Electrical Specifications

Input power: 200-230V AC, single-phase or three-phase, 50/60Hz. Output power rating: 30W continuous. Output current: 0.8A RMS continuous, 2.4A peak. Control method: Sinusoidal PWM with vector control. Built-in dynamic brake and regenerative resistor (5W). Overload capacity: 150% for 60 seconds. The drive includes an internal cooling fan. Efficiency: >85% at rated load. Power consumption: 35W typical at rated output.

Control Modes and I/O

The R7D-APA3H supports three primary modes: Position, Speed, and Torque. Position mode accepts step and direction pulses from a PLC up to 500kHz (line driver) or 200kHz (open collector). Speed mode accepts 0-10V analog voltage command. Torque mode also uses analog voltage (0-10V) or current (4-20mA) input. Digital inputs: 8 points (24V DC) for servo-on, alarm reset, gain select, and command input. Digital outputs: 5 points (open collector) for ready, alarm, positioning complete, and speed reach. Analog monitor output: ±10V for actual speed or torque.


Communication Interface

The drive includes an RS-232C port for connection to a PC with Omron’s SmartStep Configurator software. Parameters can be set, monitored, and tuned using this software. The drive also supports Modbus RTU over RS-485 (optional adapter required). For PLC integration, the pulse train interface is the primary method. The drive outputs encoder pulses (A/B/Z, line driver) for PLC feedback, with a dividing ratio programmable from 1 to 256.

Encoder and Feedback

The R7D-APA3H is designed for use with 2500-line incremental encoders (10,000 pulses per revolution after quadrature). Absolute encoder support is optional. The drive has encoder emulation output for slave drives. Encoder supply voltage: 5V DC, 200mA max. Feedback update rate: 250 µs. Position resolution: 16-bit (65,536 pulses per revolution equivalent). The drive includes Hall sensor inputs for motor commutation as backup.

Physical and Mounting

Dimensions: 40mm width x 150mm height x 100mm depth (including heat sink). Weight: 0.6 kg. Mounting: DIN rail or direct screw mounting. The heat sink must be exposed to free air for convection cooling; allow 50mm clearance above and below. IP20 protection rating. The drive uses pluggable screw terminal blocks for power and control wiring, and D-sub 9-pin and 15-pin connectors for signals. Front panel includes status LEDs and a 7-segment display for error codes.

Protection Functions

All faults are latched and require reset. A fault history log stores the last 10 errors with timestamp. The drive also has a built-in watchdog timer that disables outputs if the CPU fails.

Compatible Motors

The R7D-APA3H is designed for Omron SmartStep motors (R7M-A series) with 30W rating, 3000 rpm base speed, and rated torque of 0.095 Nm. It is also compatible with Yaskawa SGMM, SGMJH, and other manufacturers' 30W-50W AC servomotors with matching encoder specifications and winding resistance. For third-party motors, auto-tuning can adjust for different motor parameters. Motor cables with 20-pin military-style connectors are recommended.

Applications

Typical applications include small pick-and-place robots, PCB assembly stages, label applicators, medical syringe pumps, laboratory automation, camera focusing mechanisms, and miniature conveyor drives. The 30W power class is suited for light-load, high-speed positioning tasks. The drive can be mounted on a moving arm or carriage due to its lightweight design.

Operating temperature: 0°C to 50°C (derate above 40°C). Storage: -20°C to 85°C. Humidity: 20-85% non-condensing. Vibration: 0.5G at 10-55Hz. The drive is CE marked, UL 508C listed, and RoHS compliant. It meets EN 61800-3 for EMC and EN 61800-5-1 for safety. Pollution degree 2, overvoltage category III.

Configuration and Tuning

Parameters are set using the front panel keypad or SmartStep Configurator. Auto-tuning measures load inertia and sets PI gains. Manual tuning allows adjustment of proportional gain, integral time, velocity feedforward, and torque filter. The drive can store up to 8 parameter sets for different load conditions. Gain switching can be controlled by digital input. Real-time torque and speed monitoring via analog output.
