Description

Schneider HMIST6500 Harmony ST6 Touch Screen HMI

The Schneider HMIST6500 is a 10-inch widescreen touch screen operator terminal from the Harmony ST6 series. This high-performance HMI provides industrial operators with clear visualization and intuitive control for machine and process automation applications. The HMIST6500 features a high-resolution display, dual Ethernet ports, and robust connectivity options, making it suitable for integration into both new equipment designs and legacy system upgrades.

Display Specifications

The HMIST6500 features a 10-inch widescreen TFT LCD display with WSVGA resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. The active display area measures approximately 273mm wide by 203mm high, with 16 million colors providing vibrant graphics for operator interface applications. The resistive touch screen supports single-touch operation and can be operated while wearing industrial gloves, essential for washdown areas and environments where operators may work with gloves. Status indication is provided via a multi-color LED indicator bar on the front bezel, which shows the operating mode at a glance. The high pixel density enables clear rendering of complex graphics and detailed machine status displays.

Processing and Memory

The HMI is powered by an 800 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor, providing responsive screen changes and fast data processing. Memory configuration includes 1 GB of device memory, 128 MB of user data memory, and 512 KB of backup memory. The large device memory accommodates complex projects with multiple screens, animations, and data logging requirements. The backup memory retains critical configuration data during power loss. The Harmony ST6 series is designed for applications ranging from simple machine interfaces to complex data-logging operator stations.

Communication Ports

The HMIST6500 provides extensive connectivity options: two Ethernet ports (10/100Base-T) for network redundancy or dual-network connectivity, COM1 RS-232C port for legacy device connection or programming, and COM2 RS-485 port for multi-drop serial device networks. Two USB ports: USB 2.0 Type A host port for connection of external peripherals (mouse, keyboard, USB drives) and USB 2.0 Micro-B port for direct PC programming and project transfer. The dual Ethernet ports enable daisy-chaining of multiple HMIs or connection to both automation network and plant IT network simultaneously. The unit supports a wide range of industrial protocols including Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, and Schneider Electric's proprietary protocols for controllers such as M221, M241, M251, M340, M580, and Quantum.

Construction and Environmental Protection

The HMIST6500 features an aluminum front panel for enhanced mechanical rigidity and heat dissipation. The front panel is rated IP65 (dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets) and NEMA 4, making it suitable for washdown environments and outdoor applications where moisture or dust may be present. The rear enclosure is rated IP20, requiring installation in a protected control panel. The rear housing incorporates a nominal depth of approximately 52mm, allowing installation in shallow control panels. Operating temperature range is 0°C to 50°C, with humidity tolerance of 10-90% RH non-condensing.

Software and Programming

The HMIST6500 is programmed using Schneider Electric's EcoStruxure Operator Terminal Expert software (formerly Vijeo Designer). The software supports a rich library of pre-configured objects, alarms, data logging, trends, and recipes. Programming supports multi-language projects, user access control, and remote monitoring via integrated web server. The HMI is compatible with Schneider Electric's full range of PLCs and supports OPC UA client and server for secure data exchange with enterprise systems. Project transfer can be performed via USB, Ethernet, or SD card (using the external memory slot).

Power and Mounting

The HMIST6500 operates on 24V DC power, with typical consumption of approximately 15-20W depending on backlight intensity and processing load. The DC power input includes reverse polarity protection for safe installation. The unit can be flush-mounted in a panel using the included mounting clips, with proper cutout dimensions per the installation guide ensuring a secure seal. Panel thickness compatibility ranges from 1.5 to 4.0 mm.

Applications

The HMIST6500 is suitable for machine control terminals, process monitoring stations, packaging line HMIs, and data acquisition points in manufacturing environments. The 10-inch size balances screen real estate against panel space requirements, fitting many standard cutouts. Common industries include food and beverage, pharmaceutical, automotive, material handling, and general manufacturing. The dual Ethernet ports particularly benefit applications requiring connection to both machine control networks and higher-level manufacturing execution systems (MES).

Conclusion

The Schneider HMIST6500 Harmony ST6 HMI offers industrial operators a 10-inch widescreen touch interface with fast graphics performance, dual Ethernet ports, and robust environmental protection. Its combination of display quality, connectivity, and programmable features make it a versatile choice for industrial operator interface applications.
