The global geothermal community gathered to share insights

For the first time, the national keynote report on geothermal energy, "High-quality Development Report of China's Geothermal Industry," was released. The report pointed out that under the strong role of clean heating demand, China has gradually formed a geothermal development path based on heating (cooling), which provides a new idea for international geothermal development. By the end of 2021, China's geothermal heating (cooling) capacity will reach 1.33 billion square meters. In the next few years, geothermal clean heating in northern China, geothermal heating (cooling) in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and geothermal power generation in and around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau will remain hot spots for industrial development.

The authoritative report on the progress of geothermal Power generation in the world was released. According to the report, there are currently 31 countries in the world with geothermal plants in operation. The world's total installed geothermal power capacity has grown from 2,110 MW in 1980 to 16,260 MW today. In the future, as the world urgently needs to maintain the 1.5 degree Celsius temperature control target, geothermal power will have a broad prospect.

The authoritative report on the progress of geothermal heating and Cooling in the world was released. According to the report, by the end of 2022, the global installed thermal capacity for heating and cooling is equivalent to 173 million kilowatts, a 60% increase from 2020, and the largest application areas are heating and cooling of buildings, followed by health, recreation and tourism, agriculture and food processing. The declaration pointed out that it will adhere to the four principles of sustainable development, open cooperation, fairness and rationality, sharing and win-win, promote the high-quality development of the global geothermal industry, and called on the geothermal industry decision-makers to strengthen public publicity and policy support for geothermal, promote the innovation and development of global geothermal technology, promote the transfer of geothermal technology and knowledge, and link the successful global energy transformation. We will promote the joint and integrated development of geothermal energy with other clean energy sources.

This is one of the important outcomes of the 2023 World Geothermal Congress. 3 important events, 8 peripheral events, 88 parallel forums, more than 400 technical reports, more than 200 poster displays... For three days, the activities of the World Geothermal Congress were in full swing, not only bringing brainstorming, but also focusing on the innovation achievements made by the geothermal industry in various fields around the world.

"Ethiopia is one of the countries in Africa with great geothermal potential, with more than 22 areas currently identified as having geothermal resources suitable for power generation, with a total geothermal power generation potential of more than 10,000 MWH." "At the end of 2022, shallow geothermal heating (cooling) capacity is 810 million square meters, and hydrothermal geothermal heating capacity is 570 million square meters. Geothermal direct utilization of 40,936 MW, accounting for 38 percent of global geothermal direct utilization, has been among the highest in the world since 2004." It is understood that China is rich in geothermal resources, accounting for about one-sixth of the global geothermal resources, and the development and utilization potential is huge. China's geothermal direct utilization scale has been ranked first in the world for many years, and the data released by the 2021 World Geothermal Congress shows that in 2020, China's geothermal direct utilization installed capacity accounted for 37.7% of the world. In recent years, the scale of utilization of medium-deep hydrothermal geothermal energy heating in China has continued to expand, playing an important role in clean heating and air pollution prevention in northern China, and providing reference for the high-quality development of the global geothermal industry.

In the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, geothermal heating capacity of 42 million square meters has been built, serving 420,000 households and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2.06 million tons per year. In the Yellow River Basin, geothermal heating capacity of 40.3 million square meters has been built, serving 400,000 households and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.99 million tons per year. Geothermal heating capacity of 2.52 million square meters has been built in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, serving 25,000 households and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 110,000 tons per year.

It is reported that Sinopec is a leading enterprise in the development and utilization of geothermal resources in China, with 1 key laboratory for the development and utilization of geothermal resources, more than 130 technical patents, and geothermal business has radiated more than 60 cities in 11 provinces (regions and cities). It is expected that by the end of this year, Sinopec's geothermal heating capacity will exceed 100 million square meters.
