ADLINK NuDAM Series RS-485 Communication Module Networking and Configuration Practice

In industrial sites, remote and reliable communication between sensors, actuators, and controllers is the cornerstone of automation systems. The RS-485 bus, with its differential transmission, multi station capability, and communication distance of up to 4000 feet, has become the preferred physical layer for distributed data acquisition. The ADLINK NuDAM series not only offers a wide range of I/O modules, but also comes with a complete set of communication infrastructure components, including the RS-232 to RS-485 converter (ND-6520), RS-485 repeater (ND-6510), USB to RS-485 converter (ND-6530), and addressable RS-485 to RS-232 converter (ND-6521). This article will systematically explain how to build a stable and scalable NuDAM RS-485 multi station network from network architecture design, device selection, initialization configuration, command system to troubleshooting, to assist engineers in quickly completing on-site communication deployment.

RS-485 Network Fundamentals and NuDAM Topology

RS-485 adopts differential balanced transmission, supports half duplex or full duplex, and can hang up to 32 nodes under standard driving capability. The NuDAM module, designed with high input impedance, allows up to 128 modules to be connected on the same bus (without the use of repeaters). If combined with repeaters, it can theoretically be extended to 256 nodes (limited by address coding). The NuDAM system adopts a two-wire half duplex RS-485 (DATA+and DATA -) system, with all modules connected in parallel on the same pair of twisted pair cables, forming a multi station network.

The network topology supports simple daisy chain (Figure 1-1), branch topology (Figure 1-2), and free topology (Figure 1-3). In actual deployment, it is recommended to use a daisy chain or a hybrid structure with short branches to avoid reflections caused by excessively long, terminal less branches. Terminal resistors (120 Ω± 2%) must be installed at the end of each physical segment to match the characteristic impedance and eliminate signal reflections. Shielded twisted pair cables should be grounded at one end (usually on the host side) and connected to the protective ground multiple times along the bus to improve anti-interference capability.

Function and selection of core communication module

1. ND-6520 RS-232 to RS-422/485 converter

ND-6520 is a portal device for building NuDAM networks, which converts the host's standard RS-232 serial port into RS-485 signals. The default configuration is 9600 bps, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, and no checksum (10 bit packet). Built in automatic direction control, no RTS hardware handshake required. Its DB-9 female socket is connected to the host, and the wiring terminals provide DATA+/DATA - (RS-485) and independent TX+/TX -/RX+/RX - (for full duplex RS-422). Supports up to 115.2K baud rate (firmware A1.2 or above), with 2500Vrms isolation and surge protection. Suitable for all hosts with RS-232 port (PC, IPC, laptop).

2. ND-6510 RS-422/485 repeater

When the number of network nodes exceeds 128 or the bus length exceeds 4000 feet, ND-6510 must be inserted to regenerate the signal and extend the communication distance. It provides bidirectional relay function, automatically identifies transmission direction, and does not require programming. Its wiring terminals include two sets of RS-485 (DATA+/DATA -) and two sets of RS-422 (TX/RX pairs), which can flexibly connect different segments. It also supports baud rates of 1200~115.2K with a power consumption of 0.9W. The repeater can be cascaded, but adding one level will increase the delay. In practical applications, it is recommended to have at most two levels.

3. ND-6530 USB to RS-232/422/485 converter

In response to the common lack of RS-232 port in modern computers, ND-6530 provides USB interface to convert multiple serial protocols. It complies with the USB 1.1 specification, plug and play, and supports Windows 98/2000 drivers. The RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 modes can be switched through the DIP switch on the body. RS-485 supports automatic flow control; RS-232 provides RTS/CTS hardware flow control. It is powered by USB bus (no external power supply required) and has an isolation voltage of 2500Vrms. Specially suitable for expanding serial communication through USB ports on laptops or industrial computers.

4. ND-6521 addressable RS-485/422 to RS-232 converter

ND-6521 is an enhanced version of ND-6520, which is an RS-485 slave device with independent addresses (01~FF). It can route data on the RS-485 bus to sub devices connected to its RS-232 port, such as serial printers, barcode scanners, PLC programming ports, etc. It supports two working modes:

Address mode (default): The host sends a command containing a specific address, which is recognized by ND-6521 and forwarded to the RS-232 device, and the response from the sub device is sent back to the host.

Non Address Mode (Transparent Mode): When enabled through the "Open Data Gate" command (&Addr810), ND-6521 acts as a transparent converter similar to ND-6520, ignoring addresses and directly transmitting all data transparently, suitable for point-to-point communication.

This module allows different baud rates to be set on the RS-232 and RS-485 sides (set separately through configuration commands), greatly enhancing the ability to bridge devices with different speeds.

Network construction and initialization process

1. New module initialization (address and baud rate settings)

All newly purchased NuDAM modules (excluding ND-6521, but including I/O modules) have factory default address 01, baud rate 9600, and verification disabled. To avoid address conflicts, each module must be assigned a unique ID. The initialization steps are as follows:

Enter default state: Short circuit the DEFAULT * pin of the module to ground and then power it on. At this time, the module temporarily uses address 00, baud rate 9600, and verification disabled.

Connect hardware: Use ND-6520 (or ND-6530) to convert the host RS-232 to RS-485, ensuring that the converter baud rate is set to 9600. Connect the DATA+(Y), DATA - (G),+Vs (10-30V), and GND of the module.

Send configuration command: Format is% (OldAddr) (NewAddr) 40 (BaudRate) (ChecksumFlag)<CR>. For example, changing the address from 01 to 30, keeping the baud rate at 9600, and disabling the checksum:% 0130400600<CR>. Among them, 40 is the type code of the digital I/O module (ND-6521 also uses 40), 06 corresponds to 9600, and 00 indicates that verification is disabled.

Verification response: Received! 30<CR>indicates success. Remove the DEFAULT * short circuit, power on again, and the module will run according to the new configuration.

2. Add the new module to the existing network

After configuring the address, baud rate, and checksum of the new module, it needs to be consistent with the network. Operation sequence: Turn off the host and network power; Connect the DATA+, DATA -, and power cords of the new module to the bus in parallel; Confirm the polarity is correct; After powering on, use the management software to scan the entire network and verify if the new module is correctly identified.

3. Special configuration of ND-6521

The configuration command for ND-6521 is more complex, with a Data Flag of 4 characters (WXYZ) used to set address mode, checksum, interface type, RS-232 data format, etc. For example,% 013040662103<CR>means changing address 01 to 30, RS-485 and RS-232 baud rates are both 9600 (two 6s), W=2 (address mode+RS-485+no checksum), X=1 (additional CR), Z=03 (8 data bits, no checksum, 1 stop bit). For specific location definitions, please refer to section 5.4.3 of the manual.

Specification for Terminal Resistance and Shielding Grounding

Terminal resistor: Connect a 120 Ω resistor in parallel at both ends of each physical bus. On the wiring terminals of ND-6520 or ND-6510, DATA+and DATA - can be directly bridged. If a branch line is used, it should be connected at the shortest point of the branch line or an active terminal should be used.

Shielding layer: The shielding layer of the shielded twisted pair cable should be connected to the equipment casing ground (FGND) and grounded at a single point on the host side. If the on-site interference is severe, the shielding layer can be connected to the protective ground at regular intervals, but it is necessary to avoid forming a ground loop.

Key points of command system and communication protocol

All modules of NuDAM use a unified ASCII command/response protocol, with the command format being:

(LeadingCode)(Addr)(Command)[Data][Checksum]<CR>

Guidebook: such as $(read configuration), # (output),% (write configuration),~(watchdog),&(ND-6521 specific), etc.

Address: Two hexadecimal digits (00~FF).

Checksum: Optional. When enabled, the sum of all ASCII characters must be calculated and the lower byte must be taken, represented in two hexadecimal digits. For example, in the command $012B7<CR>, B7 is the checksum.

Response: Valid command returned! Or>at the beginning, invalid return?.

For ND-6521, in addition to the basic configuration, it also provides data transparency function: after setting the delimiter (such as {), use {30Data<CR>to directly send data to the RS-232 device at address 30. In addition, the host watchdog command (~* *<CR>) can uniformly reset the watchdog timers of all modules to prevent output locking after the host crashes.

Software Tools and Daily Maintenance

ADLINK provides the "NuDAM Administration" software, which runs on the Windows environment. Its main functions:

Search network: Scan the address range (00~FF) and list all online modules and models.

Terminal simulation: Directly send any command, observe the response, and facilitate debugging.

Configuration and monitoring: graphically set addresses, baud rates, I/O modes, etc.

Batch command: executable script file (BATCH.CMD) for automated testing.

In daily maintenance, regularly check whether the wiring terminals are loose and observe the status of the module LED: a green light that is constantly on indicates normal reception, flashing indicates data transmission, and turning off the light indicates no power supply. If communication is abnormal, first confirm the power supply voltage (10-30V), then use terminal software to send $002 to address 00 (assuming the module is in default state). If configuration information is returned, it proves that the physical layer is good.

Typical Troubleshooting Table

Possible causes and solutions for the fault phenomenon

Unable to find any module converter not powered on or baud rate mismatch; Bus polarity reversed; ND-6520 power supply and serial port connection inspection for signal distortion caused by unconnected terminal resistor; Confirm that the host COM port parameter is 9600, N, 8,1; Measure the voltage difference between DATA+and DATA - with a multimeter (around 200mV when idle)

Specific address no response address conflict or module not initialized; Short circuit the DEFAULT * pin separately to the module before releasing it, attempt communication with address 00, and reset the new address

The communication is intermittent and the bus is too long or has too many branches; No terminal resistor added; Poor grounding of the shielding layer shortens the bus and increases the number of repeaters; Add a 120 Ω resistor at both ends; Improve grounding and use shielded twisted pair cables

ND-6521 transparent transmission failed without opening data gate (non address mode); Delimiter setting error; RS-232 device baud rate mismatch sending&Addr810 opening door; Use~AddrD to read the current delimiter; Using% Reconfigure RS-232 baud rate

The watchdog accidentally triggered the host to not send on time~* *; If the timeout value is set too small, extend the timeout time or disable the watchdog (~Addr20000), check the feeding loop of the host program

Expansion and upgrade suggestions

For ultra large scale systems with more than 256 nodes, multiple RS-485 subnets can be divided, with each subnet bridged to another bus by an ND-6521, or hierarchical management can be achieved using an Ethernet to RS-485 gateway. However, the NuDAM native protocol is based on ASCII and has limited efficiency. If there are too many nodes, it is recommended to upgrade to Modbus RTU or CAN bus.
