ADLINK NuPRO-852 Series LGA775 Industrial Single Board Computer: A Complete Guide to On site Deployment and Hardware Troubleshooting

The demand for transitioning to more efficient computing platforms is increasing in the fields of industrial automation, process control, and data acquisition. The ADLINK NuPRO-852 series, as a PCI/ISA single board computer based on Intel Q965/Q963 and ICH8 chipsets, supports Intel Core 2 Duo, Pentium 4, Pentium D, and Celeron D processors packaged in LGA775. It is equipped with dual channel DDR2 800/667/533 memory (up to 2GB), integrated VGA controller, and selectable/dual gigabit Ethernet ports, while retaining support for ISA bus. It is an ideal bridge for the continued use and performance upgrade of old ISA devices. In the face of complex configuration requirements and potential failures on site, systematic maintenance and troubleshooting capabilities are crucial. This article is based on the official user manual of NuPRO-852 and combines frontline operation and maintenance experience to provide you with a detailed hardware debugging, configuration, and troubleshooting guide.


Chapter 1: Product Identification and Unpacking Inspection

1.1 Model configuration and features

The NuPRO-852 series is based on the Intel Q965/Q963 chipset (Q965 supports DDR2 800), with key features including:

CPU support: LGA775 socket, supports Core 2 Duo, Pentium 4, Pentium D, Celeron D

Memory: 2 240 pin DIMM slots, dual channel DDR2 800/667/533, maximum 2GB

Display: Integrated VGA controller for chipset

Network: selectable/dual Gigabit Ethernet ports (Intel 82573L/82566DM)

I/O: 2 serial ports (COM1 supports RS-232/422/485), 1 parallel port, 1 x ATA133 IDE, 2 x SATA II, 4 x USB 2.0, PS/2 KB/Ms

Expansion: PCI/ISA Gold Finger (supports ISA high drive)

Size: 12.3cm × 33.9cm (SBC specification)

1.2 Anti static and Operating Standards

The manual clearly requires: 'Use a grounded writer strap before handling computer components. Static electricity may damage the components.' All operations must be carried out at an anti-static workstation, using a grounded wristband.


Chapter 2: Core Component Installation - CPU, Heat Sink, and Memory

2.1 Key points for LGA775 CPU installation

NuPRO-852 uses LGA775 (Socket T) socket, installation steps:

Unlock the load rod: Press down on the hook of the load rod, disengage from the fixed buckle, and rotate upwards to about 135 °.

Open the load board: Rotate the load board upwards to about 100 °.

Remove the protective cover: Press the center of the protective cover with your thumb, and at the same time grab the protective cover tab to remove it.

Alignment installation: Identify the two positioning notches on the CPU and align them with the positioning keys on the socket. Important warning: 'Tilting the processor into place or shifting it into place on the socket can damage the sensitive socket contacts.' must be placed vertically and cannot be tilted or slid.

Locking: Close the load plate, press down the load lever, and fasten it into the fixed buckle.

Important reminder: "In order to boot up with a newly installed CPU, AC power must be switched off before installation." AC power must be disconnected before installing the CPU.

2.2 Heat sink installation and "anti bending" warning

The manual emphasizes: "Please make sure that you use a CPU cooler bundle with a retention module to keep the PCB from crowdedness. A crowked SBC may result in an unknown problem

A heat sink with a fixed backplate must be used to prevent PCB bending and deformation.

Thermal grease must be applied between the CPU and the heat sink to ensure sufficient contact. Manual warning: "Overheating will seriously damage the CPU and system. Always make sure the cooling fan can work properly

The internal ambient temperature of the chassis (CPU fan inlet) shall not exceed 38 ° C.

Connect the fan power cord to CPU_SAN1 (4-pin, supports PWM speed regulation).

2.3 DDR2 Memory Installation

Key points for memory installation:

The memory module has a foolproof notch in the center, which can only be inserted in the correct direction.

Insert the DIMM slot vertically until the plastic buckles on both sides automatically lock.

Tip: "You can bare see the golden finger if the memory module is properly inserted in the DIMM slot." After installation, the golden finger is almost invisible.

It is recommended to use memory modules of the same brand and specifications for dual channel configuration.

Chapter 3: Jumper Configuration - COM1 Mode Switching, CMOS Clearing, and Password Clearing

3.1 COM1 serial port mode selection (JP1, JP2, JP3)

COM1 supports three modes: RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485, configured through three sets of jumper combinations:

COM2 is fixed as RS-232 and comes out through a standard 10 pin pin header, supporting 16550A UART (16 byte FIFO).
