ADLINK PCIe GIE72/74 GigE Vision Poe+Image Acquisition Card Deployment and Optimization Guide

In the fields of machine vision, scientific research, and medical imaging, high-speed, reliable, and easy to integrate image acquisition solutions are the key to the success or failure of the system. The ADLINK PCIe-GIE7x series (including 2-channel PCIe-GIE72/72 PRO and 4-channel PCIe-GIE74/74 PRO) serves as a GigE Vision frame grabber for the PCI Express x4 interface. It not only provides up to 4 independent Gigabit Ethernet ports, but also provides a one-stop solution for high-end visual applications through PoE+(IEEE 802.3at) power supply, hardware level ToE (Trigger over Ethernet) triggering, fine power management and protection mechanisms, and PRO version specific software license management. This article will systematically explain the key points of engineering deployment for this series of products, including hardware architecture, power planning, trigger synchronization, software configuration, and on-site troubleshooting.


Product Family and Selection Considerations

The PCIe GIE7x series is based on Intel ®  I210 Gigabit Controller, supporting PCIe v2.1 x4 channels (2.5 GT/s), available in the following four models:

PCIe-GIE72: 2 independent gigabit ports, standard version, supporting PoE+, PoE protection, and power management.

PCIe-GIE72 PRO: Added ToE (Trigger over Ethernet) and software license management functions on the basis of the standard version.

PCIe-GIE74:4 port standard version also has complete PoE+features.

PCIe-GIE74 PRO: 4-port enhanced version, additionally supports up to 120W PoE total power (requires simultaneous connection of 4-pin and 6-pin 12V power supplies), and integrates ToE and license management.

Selection suggestion: If only basic image acquisition is required and no external trigger synchronization is needed, the standard version is sufficient; If multiple camera synchronous acquisition (ToE) needs to be triggered through Ethernet broadcasting, or if third-party software IP needs to be protected (license management), the PRO version should be selected. For 4-port high-power requirements (such as driving multiple high-power IP cameras), PCIe-GIE74 PRO is the only model that supports a 120W budget.


Deep analysis of core functions

2.1 PoE+power supply and automatic detection

PCIe-GIE7x complies with the IEEE 802.3at standard, with each port providing 50~57V and a maximum output power of 30W, and is backward compatible with IEEE 802.3af (15.4W). When powered on, the main control automatically detects the type of connected device (PoE, PoE+, or non PoE) and assigns the corresponding protocol without manual intervention. The actual available power is affected by the length of the cable - for example, on a 100 meter Cat5e cable, although Class 3 devices obtain 15.4W from PSE, the PD end can only obtain about 12.95W, and the minimum power consumption requirement for the camera needs to be considered during design.

2.2 Comprehensive PoE protection mechanism

Voltage fluctuations, short circuits, or overheating in industrial sites often damage equipment. The PCIe-GIE7x is equipped with four layers of protection:

Undervoltage/Overvoltage Protection (UVP/OVP): When the output voltage exceeds the normal range (50~57V), the power supply is immediately cut off to prevent damage to the PD.

Overcurrent protection (OCP): Different current thresholds (ICUT) are set according to the PoE level (Class 1-4), for example, the ICUT of Class 4 is 638mA ± 5%, and it will be turned off if exceeded.

Overheating protection (OTP): pre-set high temperature (HT, default 130 ℃) and low temperature (LT, default 90 ℃) thresholds. When the temperature of the board rises to HT, PoE will be automatically turned off and restored after it drops below LT. Users can adjust HT (80-130 ℃) and LT (70-120 ℃) through SDK or tools.

Power budget management: When the total consumption exceeds the maximum power allowed by the power source (PCIe slot or external 12V connector), the system cuts off the power supply to low priority ports according to a fixed priority (port 1 is the highest, port 4 is the lowest) to avoid overload.

2.3 PoE Power Budget Planning (Key)

There are three modes for the PoE power source of PCIe-GIE7x, which need to be selected according to the actual situation:

Maximum budget applicable scenarios for power sources

Only PCIe slot (+12V) 20W low-power camera (such as 2 Class 2 devices)

Only 4-pin or 6-pin Molex connectors (+ 12V@6A )61.6W 4-port standard version, capable of driving multiple Class 3/4 devices

Simultaneously connect 4-pin and 6-pin Molex (6A each) 120W (PRO version only) high-power 4-port applications, such as smart cameras with heating or lighting functions

Important reminder: When using an external 12V power supply, make sure that the output current of the power adapter is ≥ 6A and the wire diameter is thick enough (AWG 18 is recommended) to reduce voltage drop. If the budget is insufficient, the system will automatically cut off power supply according to priority (Port1>Port2>Port3>Port4), and real-time power consumption and remaining budget can be queried through SDK.
