Beckhoff C6030 Ultra Compact Industrial PC: From Hardware Architecture to Engineering Practice

In the field of industrial automation, industrial PC (IPC) serves as a unified platform for control, visualization, and data processing, and its performance and reliability directly determine the overall level of automation systems. The C6030 series ultra compact industrial PCs launched by Beckhoff are an ideal choice for achieving equipment automation, IoT data preprocessing, high-end HMI applications, and multi axis motion control due to their powerful computing capabilities, rich interface configurations, and flexible installation methods. The device adopts a fanless cooling design (relying on cooling or external fans, but actually equipped with replaceable fans), supporting transportation and storage temperatures from -25 ℃ to+65 ℃ and working temperatures from 0 ℃ to 55 ℃ (optional extension to 70 ℃). Detailed explanation of hardware interface

The front panel (or designated direction) of C6030 integrates the following interfaces, all of which are located on the same side, facilitating cable management inside the control cabinet.

2.1 Power interface (X101)

Type: 2 × 2-pin power socket (comes with pluggable terminals)

Rated voltage: 24 V DC (allowable range 22-30 V)

Maximum current: 8 A (socket specification)

Wire cross-section: maximum 1.5 mm ²

Pin definition:

Pin 1: PC-ON (input, low level=power on, high level=power off)

Pin 2: P-Power Status (Output, 24V indicates that the system has been completely shut down)

Pin 3:24 V

Pin 4:GND (0 V)

PC-ON signal is anti logic: when the input is 0V, the operating system starts; When the input is 24V, execute the normal shutdown process. During normal operation, 0V must be maintained. The Power Status output can be used to control the main contactor, with a maximum load capacity of 0.5A and no additional fuses required.

2.2 Ethernet interface (X102-X105)

C6030 provides four Gigabit Ethernet ports (RJ45), supporting 100/1000/2500 Mbit/s (depending on device generation). The controller allocation is as follows:

C6030-0060/0070:

LAN1 (X102):Intel ®  I219 PHY (suitable for real-time Ethernet with cycle time>1ms, does not support distributed clock)

LAN2~LAN4 (X103-X105):Intel ®  I210 (supports ≤ 1ms cycle and EtherCAT distributed clock)

C6030-0080:

LAN1 (X102):Intel ®  i219

LAN2~LAN4 (X103-X105):Intel ®  I226 (supports 2500Mbit/s)

LED indication:

LINK/ACT (green): Constant light indicates connection, flashing indicates data transfer.

SPEED:

For 100/1000M devices: Orange=100M, Green=1000M

For 100/1000/2500M devices: unlit=100M, orange=1000M, green=2500M

2.3 USB interface (X106-X109)

C6030-0060:4× USB 3.0

C6030-0070:2× USB 3.2 Gen.1 (X106,X107) + 2× USB 3.2 Gen.2 (X108,X109)

Each USB port has a maximum power supply of 900mA and is equipped with electronic overcurrent protection (Port A/B shares one set of overcurrent detection, Port C/D shares another set). Overcurrent on any port will cause two ports in the same group to close simultaneously.

2.4 DisplayPort interface (X110, X111)

Two DisplayPort ports, supporting video signal output. DVI signal can be output through adapter cable C9900-Z468 (DisplayPort to DVI, 40cm). When the appropriate adapter is connected, the hardware will automatically switch to HDMI signal (compliant with the DisplayPort specification).

Installation and mechanical dimensions

3.1 Size and Weight

Body (excluding mounting plate): 132 mm (width) x 133 mm (height) x 76 mm (depth)

Weight: Approximately 1460g (without mounting plate), approximately 1700g (including mounting plate)

3.2 Installation method

The C6030 comes with a standard mounting plate (Standard Type 1) when it leaves the factory, which is used to install it inside the control cabinet through the narrow edge (side) of the equipment. Optional mounting plate 2 (order numbers C9900-M668, C9900-M669) can be installed only through the right side wall. The installation board is fixed with 4 Torx TX10 screws, with a tightening torque of approximately 0.5 Nm.

Installation direction (using standard installation board 1):

Installation through the back wall of the device

Install through the top surface of the device

Install through the bottom of the device

When using optional mounting board 2, the interface can be oriented in any direction (up, down, left, right).

3.3 Installation precautions

Ventilation gap: At least 5 cm of free space must be left around the equipment to ensure air circulation.

Protection level: IP20 (finger protection only, no waterproof). Do not use in damp, dusty, or explosive environments.

Fixed: Use M4 screws to hang the keyhole of the mounting plate into the pre installed screws, and then tighten them.


Grounding and electrical connection

4.1 Protective Grounding and Functional Grounding

The C6030 body is equipped with a protective grounding terminal (PE), which must be connected to the central grounding point of the control cabinet using a wire or flat conductor with a cross-sectional area of not less than 4 mm ².

Protective grounding (PE): prevents dangerous contact voltage and complies with the requirements of EN 60204-1:2006 for PELV circuits.

Functional grounding (FE): Ensure electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and equipment meets EN 61000-6-2 (immunity) and EN 61000-6-4 (radiation). Failure to perform functional grounding may result in damage caused by electromagnetic interference.

4.2 Power wiring sequence

Complete the protective grounding connection first.

Connect all data cables (Ethernet, USB, DisplayPort).

Connect the 24V power cord to the power plug, then insert the plug into X101 and lock it.

Finally, connect the 24V power supply.


Full analysis of status LED indicator lights

The front panel of C6030 provides four status LEDs, which are crucial for on-site fault diagnosis.

Meaning of LED color/status

UPS OCT is constantly off and not connected to UPS OCT

Blue flashing Bootloader activation

Yellow constant light, medium signal quality

Green constantly on, good signal quality

Red constant brightness, poor signal quality

PWR is constantly off and PC is turned off

UPS OCT Technology and Configuration

UPS OCT (One Cable Technology) is Beckhoff's unique uninterruptible power supply communication technology, which modulates 24V power supply and bidirectional data on the same pair of lines, allowing external UPS (such as CU81xx series) to be connected with just one cable. C6030 supports this function (can be confirmed through the nameplate).

BIOS configuration steps:

Start up and enter BIOS Setup, then go to the Advanced tab.

Enter the Power Controller Options.

Change UPS OCT Access from default [Off] to [Auto].

Save and exit.

After activation, the BIOS will display the detected UPS and connection method (detected via OCT or detected via USB). If both USB and OCT are connected at the same time, the priority of USB connection is higher.

If you need to enable UPS OCT from the factory, you can order the special BIOS option C9900-B654.

Maintenance and replacement of vulnerable parts

Beckhoff recommends regularly replacing the following components to ensure long-term reliability of the equipment:

3.5-inch hard drive for 5 years

Motherboard battery (CR2032) 5 years

7.1 Replacing the motherboard battery

The C6030 uses a CR2032 lithium battery (3V, 225mAh) to maintain real-time clock and BIOS settings. When replacing:

Remove the 4 Torx TX10 screws from the right cover plate.

Find the battery holder (located next to the SSD).

Use a lever to pry up the old battery from the negative side and remove it.

Install a new battery with the positive pole (+) facing upwards, insert it diagonally under the positive pole contact, and then press it down.

Attention: Only R/C (BBCV2) type, model RC2032, can be used. Other types are not allowed to avoid fire or explosion.

7.2 Replacing SSD

Turn off the power and disconnect all connections.

Open the right cover plate.

For C6030-0060 and C6030-0070/0080, the SSD slot positions are slightly different (as shown in the instruction manual).

Loosen the fixing screw (Torx TX10), and the SSD will automatically pop up at a tilt angle.

Pull out the old SSD, insert the new SSD (at the same tilt angle), press and tighten the screw (torque 0.5 Nm).

It is recommended to use Beckhoff Service Tool (BST) to backup the operating system image before replacement.

7.3 Fan replacement

Remove the decorative strip (logo strip) on the upper and lower covers of the equipment.

Unscrew a total of 4 Torx TX10 screws from the upper and lower covers.

Pull out the fan casing.

Remove the two Torx screws on the fan mounting plate and unplug the fan power cord (which needs to be threaded through the wire hole).

Install a new fan, reconnect the power cord, and reinstall the casing.


Common troubleshooting

Possible causes and solutions for the fault phenomenon

The device is completely non functional and the power supply is missing. Check the 24V cable and measure whether the terminal voltage is between 22-30V

Unable to fully boot (black screen) BIOS setup error Enter BIOS load defaults

Start but control abnormal software or external device issues Contact the machine or software manufacturer

TwinCAT access error via USB. The default cycle time of 10ms is too short. The TwinCAT cycle time has been increased to 50-80ms

UPS OCT does not work. BIOS does not enable it. Enable UPS OCT Access as Auto as described above

Real time clock reset, motherboard battery depleted, replace CR2032 battery
