Omron CJ1W-AD041 Four-Channel Analog Input Unit for CJ-Series PLCs

The Omron CJ1W-AD041 is a CPU bus unit that adds four channels of analog input capability to CJ-series PLCs. It accepts voltage or current signals from transducers, sensors, and field instruments, converting them to digital values for processing in the PLC program. With selectable input ranges and high resolution, this unit is suited for process monitoring, machine condition monitoring, and closed-loop control applications requiring precise analog measurement.

Data Format and Scaling

Analog input data is converted to digital values and stored in the allocated CIO words accessible by the CPU. For the -10V to +10V range, the digital value span is from -32000 to +32000 (14-bit signed integer). For 0V to 10V, 0V to 5V, and 4-20mA ranges, the digital value spans from 0 to 12000 (scaled for 12-bit resolution). An overload detection feature alerts the CPU when the input exceeds the specified range by 15% or more, enabling diagnostics for sensor failure or wiring disconnection.

Analog Filtering and Averaging

The CJ1W-AD041 includes programmable filtering to reduce noise and stabilize readings in electrically noisy industrial environments. The unit provides a moving average filter with selectable number of samples (1 to 32). For slower-changing signals such as temperature, the user can select a short integration time that also reduces noise in the measurement. The filter settings can be configured individually per channel via the unit’s DM configuration words.

Compatible PLCs and Systems

The CJ1W-AD041 is compatible with all CJ-series CPU units, including CJ1G, CJ1H, CJ2H, and CJ2M models. Up to 80 analog input units can be mounted depending on CPU capacity and power budget. The unit occupies one slot in a CJ-series main rack or expansion rack. It can be used with CS-series PLCs using a CJ adapter (CS1W-BCxx3). I/O points are allocated as CPU Bus Unit words: 14 input words (for analog data and status) and no output words required.

Analog Input Wiring

Field wiring is straightforward with the screw terminal block. For voltage measurement, connect the signal source across V+ and V- terminals. For current loop measurement (4-20mA), connect the current source across I+ and I- terminals. Shielded twisted-pair cable is recommended for all analog signals to minimize electromagnetic interference. The common terminal (COM) should be connected to the instrument ground at a single point to avoid ground loops.

Applications

Typical applications include monitoring of pressure and flow transmitters (4-20mA), tank level measurement, temperature sensors with analog output, motor current monitoring, position feedback with analog displacement transducers (LVDT/RVDT), and machinery condition monitoring through vibration sensors with analog outputs. The unit can also be used in closed-loop PID control where a process variable is measured and compared to a setpoint.
