Mitsubishi OSA104S Absolute Serial Encoder

The Mitsubishi OSA104S is a high-precision optical absolute encoder designed for use with Mitsubishi's AC servo motor and spindle motor series. This feedback device provides the motor's absolute position information, eliminating the need for a homing routine at each machine startup. The absolute position data is retained even after a power outage, significantly reducing downtimes and increasing operational efficiency on CNC machining centers and other automated equipment.

Control Principle and Position Retention

Unlike standard incremental encoders that generate pulses relative to a starting zero point, this absolute encoder uses a unique code disk to assign a distinct value to each position of the shaft. The OSA104S provides this absolute position value, via its serial interface, immediately upon request by the drive controller. This specific characteristic qualifies this component as a serial absolute encoder. Its resolution is typically defined as 1000 pulses per revolution (P/R), allowing the drive to precisely regulate speed, acceleration, and dwell time at the target position.


Communication and Compatibility

The encoder uses a high-speed serial communication protocol over an RS-422 differential interface to transmit data to the drive controller. This reduces the number of wires required in the motor feedback cable compared to a traditional incremental encoder with commutation tracks. The OSA104S is technically compatible with a wide range of Mitsubishi drive series, including the MDS-C1 series and Mitsubishi Electric CNC controllers (MELDAS).    This seamless compatibility ensures that the motor control remains stable and accurate even under dynamic changes in load.

Construction and Material Quality

The OSA104S is housed in a robust metal casing made of steel or aluminum, designed to protect the sensitive optical components from shock, vibration, and environmental contaminants. Four bolts fix the encoder securely to the rear of the servo motor. The connector interface is standardized for Mitsubishi power cables and encoder cables, allowing straightforward integration into existing systems without special adapters.

Diagnostic Capabilities and Predictive Maintenance

This absolute encoder features built-in diagnostic functionality that monitors its internal operating status, including the condition of the optical light source and the signal strength. This data is sent back to the drive controller, which can then generate a warning to the CNC operator before the encoder fails. This predictive maintenance feature helps facility managers plan service interventions and avoid unplanned machine stops caused by a malfunctioning feedback system.

Applications with Servo Motors

The OSA104S is an integral part of Mitsubishi's AC servo motor series, including models like the HA-LFS, HA-LFK, and HA-LSH series, which are used for a wide variety of applications. Typical fields of operation include machining centers, turning machines, precision pressing, and general factory automation. All industrial equipment that requires precise speed control and absolute positioning relies on this feedback component to consistently achieve its high performance.
