Omron 3F88L-160 Programmable Cam Positioner

The Omron 3F88L-160 is a high-resolution programmable cam positioner (also known as a rotary cam switch) that provides up to 160 independently programmable output channels. It precisely tracks the angular position of a rotating shaft using an external incremental encoder or resolver, then switches outputs ON/OFF at preset angles. This device completely replaces mechanical cam limit switches, offering flexible angle adjustment without physical cam changes, reduced wear, and higher switching accuracy.

Angle hysteresis (0 to 9.9 degrees) can be set per output to prevent chattering at switching thresholds.

Programming and Operation Modes

Programming is done via the front panel 4-line LCD and 6 keys, or through an optional PC software (CX-Programmer with special module). Each output has two settable angles: ON angle and OFF angle, independently adjustable in 0.1-degree steps. The device supports three operating modes: Normal mode (real-time output following encoder), Simulation mode (virtual rotation for program testing), and Teach mode (set angles by manually rotating the machine to desired positions and pressing a button). Up to 16 different cam patterns can be stored, and pattern selection can be controlled by PLC digital outputs.

PLC Integration and Remote I/O

The 3F88L-160 is designed to work as a stand-alone positioner or as a slave device in a PLC-controlled system. It provides 8 digital inputs (24V DC) for functions such as pattern select, angle preset, output enable/disable, and reset. All 160 output statuses are available for monitoring via a built-in RS-485 port using Modbus RTU, allowing a PLC (e.g., Omron CJ2M) to read current output states and override them.
