The theme of China's Nurses Day 2021 is "Inherit red genes, Innovate and develop nursing". In the revolutionary war period, the socialist construction period, the reform and opening up period and the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics and other different stages, the majority of nursing workers, as an indispensable and important force on the medical and health front, have always passed on the spirit of the Red Revolution, whether in daily medical and nursing work, or in the face of major infectious disease threats and natural disasters at critical moments. They have faithfully performed the important duty of safeguarding people's lives and health, and made important contributions to promoting the development of health undertakings, improving the health of the whole people, and enhancing the well-being of the people. At the critical moment of the fight against the novel coronavirus epidemic, the majority of nursing workers did not live up to the trust of the Party and the people, and went to war in white clothes, risking their lives and fighting hard, and interpreted the spirit of benevolence and great love of doctors with practical actions.

In recent years, especially since the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, the National Health Commission has actively adapted to the new requirements of the new era and the new expectations of the people for nursing work, strengthened the top-level design, focused on weaknesses, and comprehensively promoted the rapid development of nursing work, with remarkable results. The construction of the nurse team continues to strengthen, the quality of nursing services continues to improve, the level of nursing management steadily improves, the field of nursing services continues to expand, the nursing service model is more diversified, the supply of nursing services continues to increase, and gradually meet the diversified and multi-level nursing service needs of the people.

The number of nurses continues to grow. By the end of 2020, the total number of registered nurses nationwide has exceeded 4.7 million, an increase of 1.46 million, or 45%, compared with 3.24 million in 2015. The number of registered nurses per 1,000 population increased from 2.37 in 2015 to 3.35 in 2020, and the national medical and nursing ratio increased from 1:1.07 in 2015 to 1:1.15. More than 70 percent of nurses have college degrees or above, and the educational quality and professional service ability of nurses are constantly improving.

The quality of nursing services has continued to improve. Through the continuous development of high-quality nursing services and the implementation of the nurse service ability improvement project, the quality of nursing services has been continuously improved, the primary nursing service ability has been significantly improved, and the nursing work is closer to the patients, close to the clinic and close to the society. Medical institutions at or above the secondary level have basically achieved 100% coverage of high-quality nursing services in all regions, and patients' satisfaction has been continuously improved, and the public's sense of access to medical services has been further enhanced.

The field of nursing services continues to expand. By carrying out the "Internet + nursing service" pilot work, implementing the development project of elderly care services, exploring the promotion of home medical care services for the elderly, extending nursing services in medical institutions to the community and home, benefiting more elderly or disabled elderly people, discharged patients and other people with mobility difficulties. Nurses provide more diversified medical care services to the masses, playing an important role in disease prevention, treatment, nursing and rehabilitation, hospice care and other fields.

Fourth, the level of nursing management has been steadily improved. During the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, nursing management has been continuously strengthened, and electronic registration management of nurses has been fully implemented, making nurse practice management more convenient and efficient. The nursing management organization system and rules and regulations of medical institutions have been improved, and the nursing post management system has been gradually established, and the nurse manpower allocation, training and assessment based on nursing posts have been implemented, so as to realize the same pay and treatment for nurses, more work and more pay for excellent performance, and fully mobilize the enthusiasm of nurses.

The 14th Five-Year Plan period is the first five years in which China, after completing the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects and achieving the first centenary goal, embarked on a new journey to fully build a modern socialist country and march toward the second centenary goal.

In the next step, the NHC will accurately grasp the new development stage, thoroughly implement the new development concept, accelerate the construction of a new development pattern, adhere to the new era of health and health work policy, vigorously strengthen the construction of the nurse team, effectively increase the supply of nursing services, especially elderly medical and nursing services, and promote the high-quality development of nursing work: first, strengthen the construction of the nurse team. Strengthen the construction of nurses as an important basic work in the development of health care, improve the incentive mechanism, enhance the sense of professional honor, and mobilize the enthusiasm of nurses. Continue to increase the number of nurses, strengthen the training of nurses, improve the overall quality, meet the overall needs of health care development, and meet the diversified and multi-level nursing needs of the people. Second, we will promote high-quality development of nursing work. Taking people's health as the center, we will further promote quality nursing services, promote reform and innovation in the nursing field, promote the development of nursing services, promote nursing work close to patients, close to clinical, close to society, and improve people's health and well-being with high-quality nursing services.
