AB 1756-CN2 1756-CN2R ControlLogix ControlNet Interface Module

IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND SAFETY WARNINGS: Solid-state equipment has different characteristics than electromechanical equipment and should be used to ensure that the application is acceptable and Rockwell is not responsible for consequential damages. Safety risks are identified in the documentation by various symbols, such as warnings of explosion, electric shock, burns, and other hazards.

Hazardous area approvals: Zone 2 certified products in Europe have restrictions on their use and require specific enclosures with specific levels of protection, etc.; when used in North American Class I Division 2 environments, the temperature code for the combined system has requirements that require attention to the risk of explosion prevention during operation.

Environment and housing requirements: for pollution level 2, overvoltage category II, altitude of 2000 metres below the industrial environment, need to be installed in a suitable shell, the shell should be flame-retardant and so on.

Static electricity protection: the equipment is sensitive to static electricity, the operation needs to touch the grounded object, wear a grounded wrist strap and other anti-static measures.

Module type and control: 1756-CN2 for non-redundant media, 1756-CN2R for redundant media, also available for independent control. For redundant control, pairs of modules need to be set to the same network address and installed in the corresponding slot.

Pre-installation preparation: Understand how to handle the module, prepare power supply, module, chassis, taps, USB cable and other components.

Module installation steps: set the network address (independent modules need to be unique), can reset the module to the factory settings. Before installation, prepare the chassis and power supply, determine the mounting slot, insert the module and ensure a good connection.

Network connection: Connect the module to the network with the specified taps, redundant media and non-redundant media are connected in different ways, pay attention to the risk of electric shock and explosion when connecting, and check the status of the module after connection.

Module Removal: Press the upper and lower tabs to slide out the module; when replacing the module, pay attention to keep the address and slot unchanged.

Software Setup: Installation EDS file can be uploaded from the module or downloaded from the website. Configure RSLinx software to use USB port, after installing USB driver, you can carry out programming and other operations through USB connection, pay attention to the length of USB cable and the use of environmental requirements.

Caution

Network Address Setting: The same ControlNet network address must be selected for each pair of redundantly controlled modules (i.e. master and slave). This is because in a redundant system, pairs of modules need to communicate and work together via the same network address. If the addresses are different, the system will not recognise them as a pair of redundant modules, and thus redundant control functions cannot be achieved. In practice, when using a small screwdriver to set the network address switch of the module, make sure that the address of the master and slave modules is the same, such as set to the same address between 01 - 99. Address 00 is an invalid address and cannot be used.

Slot arrangement: Pairs of redundant modules should be placed in the same corresponding slots in their respective redundant control chassis pairs. In the case of a ControlLogix redundant system, for example, modules performing the same function in the master and slave chassis should be installed in the same numbered slots. This arrangement helps the system quickly identify and switch between the master and slave modules, and ensures that when the master module fails, the slave module can take over in time to maintain normal system operation. When determining the location of the module slots, it should be clear that Slot 0 is the first slot and is located on the far left side of the rack, to the right of the power supply, and that pairs of modules should be installed in the corresponding slots with the same number.

Correct connection: When using redundant media, the connection of pairs of modules should be carried out in strict accordance with the specifications. Specifically, connect the channels of the master and redundant slave modules to the same network segment, i.e., from trunkline A to channel A of the 1756-CN2R module and from trunkline B to channel B of the 1756-CN2R module. During the connection process, carefully check the labelling on the tap drop cable to avoid incorrect connections. Incorrect connections will result in incorrect display of the module status, affecting the normal operation of the system and making troubleshooting more difficult.
