3. Fault logs and event records
The device has a built-in diagnostic function that can record alarm and trip signals. If a "CROWBAR" action or demagnetization alarm occurs at the moment of grid connection, by reading the event log of CMT 1000, it is possible to quickly determine whether it is an abnormality triggered by the thyristor or an external shutdown command triggered incorrectly.

System configuration and constraint logic under complex operating conditions
To achieve complete fault free replacement, it is necessary to understand the built-in protection logic of the UNITOL 1000. When upgrading old systems, it is often necessary to replace complex hardware relay boards with software parameters.
1. Standard and optional restriction functions
The UNITROL 1000 comes standard with PID algorithm voltage regulation, Cos φ regulation, reactive current regulation, and bumpless transfer - the output does not fluctuate when switching between different operating modes (such as voltage mode to manual current mode).
Its core limiting functions include:
V/Hz limit: prevents magnetic saturation and core overheating of the generator at low frequencies.
Over excitation limit (OEL): Adopting a three-stage delay, temperature dependent, to prevent rotor overheating.
Underexcitation limit (UEL): prevents the generator from absorbing too much reactive power and causing loss of step.
Stator current limitation: also temperature dependent to avoid stator winding burnout.
PT disconnection detection: When the measured voltage circuit is disconnected and the voltage reading is abnormally low, the voltage regulator will automatically lock to prevent false strong excitation.
2. Advanced options to enhance system stability
If applied in large-scale power grids or scenarios with extremely high requirements for power system stability, optional functions are crucial:
Power System Stabilizer (PSS): Compliant with IEEE 2A/2B standards, capable of effectively suppressing low-frequency oscillations.
Automatic synchronization and synchronization check: Built in automatic synchronizer can replace external independent synchronization devices, reducing system complexity.
Rotating diode monitoring: For brushless excitation systems, diagnose whether the rotating diode is damaged by monitoring the characteristic harmonics of the rotor circuit.
3. Redundant systems and reactive power allocation
Dual channel system (100% redundant): In critical power plants, a dual channel system consisting of two UNITOL 1000-15s can be used. When the main channel fails, the backup channel can take over without interference. Support Setpoint tracking through CAN Bus.
Reactive power distribution (RS 485): When multiple generators are running in parallel on the same bus, if there are differences in PT signals, it can lead to uneven distribution of reactive power. The UNITROL 1000 supports reactive current balancing control between up to 32 parallel running generators through the RS 485 interface, completely solving the problem of "reactive power competition between generators". In addition, RS 485 also supports the standard Modbus RTU protocol and can upload data to DCS.
Deployment and Testing Strategy
When performing physical replacement, it is recommended to follow the following steps:
Power supply verification: The UNITROL 1000-15 supports a wide range of auxiliary power input (AC 50~250V, DC 18~300V), but it is necessary to ensure stable power supply (IGBT chopper) for the power part (0~250V AC or 0~300V DC). If using PMG (permanent magnet generator) for power supply, it is necessary to confirm whether its output frequency and voltage match (supporting 40-600Hz).
Interface remapping: The bottom of the device provides extremely rich I/O interfaces, including 4 digital inputs, 4 programmable digital outputs (which can be redefined as inputs), 3 analog inputs (± 10V/100k Ω), and 2 analog outputs. The relay signal of the old system must find the corresponding mapping in these terminals.
Test mode: Using the built-in "Setpoint step" function and "Test output voltage control" mode of UNITOL 1000, test the response speed and overshoot of PID using CMT 1000 oscilloscope without grid connection or loading.
Soft Start: Configure soft start parameters (starting voltage percentage, holding time, ramp up time) to avoid significant mechanical shock or overvoltage during startup voltage building.
