In the field of industrial computing platforms, with the continuous increase in processor performance requirements, full-length PICMG single board computers based on Intel Pentium 4 processors once became the mainstream choice for high-end industrial automation, image processing, and telecommunications applications. The NuPRO-840 series launched by ADLINK is a representative product of this period - equipped with Intel 845 chipset, Pentium 4 processor (1.3GHz~2.4GHz and above) supporting mPGA478 interface, DDR memory, SiS305 independent video memory VGA controller, dual gigabit/100Mbps Ethernet ports (depending on the model number), Ultra DMA/100 IDE, and high driver ISA bus, providing strong support for industrial scenarios that pursued ultimate computing performance at that time.

To this day, a large number of industrial control systems based on NuPRO-840 continue to operate in production lines, traffic monitoring, and military equipment. The NuPRO-840DV is more suitable as a gateway or communication node that requires redundant network links due to its dual network ports; The NuPRO-840LV is suitable for control applications that only require basic network connectivity. The two are highly compatible in terms of jumpers, BIOS, and drivers.


Core hardware architecture and technical characteristics

1. Processor and chipset

CPU socket: mPGA478 ZIF socket, supports Intel Pentium 4 FC-PGA2 processor (Willamette/Northwood core), front-end bus 400MHz.

Chipset: Intel 82845 Memory Control Center (MCH)+82801BA I/O Control Center (ICH2). This combination supports up to 2GB DDR SDRAM (200MHz, i.e. PC-1600 or PC-2100) and provides 1GB/s memory bandwidth.

Memory: Two 184 pin DDR DIMM slots, supporting 2.5V single/double-sided DIMMs, must use 200MHz DDR SDRAM (PC-1600/2100).

2. Display and Storage

VGA: iS305 3D graphics engine, equipped with 8/16MB dedicated graphics memory (display cache U1/U3), supports AGP 2X, and has a maximum resolution of 1600 × 1200. Supports DDC2B.

IDE: Dual channel EIDE, supports Ultra DMA/33/66/100, can connect up to four IDE devices (CN1 Primary/CN3 Secondary). The 20 pins of Primary IDE provide+5V power and can be directly plugged into DiskOnModule (DOM).

FDD: CN5 34 pin interface, supports two floppy drives.

3. I/O interface

Serial port: COM1 (CN4) and COM2 (CN2), both RS-232 (16550 compatible).

Parallel port: CN7, supports SPP/EPP/ECP mode, ESD protection 4KV.

USB:CN11, Two USB 1.1 ports with independent overcurrent protection.

PS/2: CN17 is a keyboard/mouse combination interface (separated by a Y-shaped line), and there is also an external keyboard interface for CN18.

IrDA:CN10, Support infrared communication (SIR).

4. Network (only DV or LV with single port)

LAN1 (100Mbps): Intel 82562EM, supports 10/100Mbps adaptive, WOL, Located at CN13 (RJ-45).

LAN2 (Gigabit, DV only): Intel 82540EM, supports 10/100/1000Mbps, located on CN22 (RJ-45), with independent LED indicating link and activity status.

5. PCI to ISA Bridge and ISA High Driver

Adopting ITE IT8888 bridge chip, 32-bit PCI to ISA, compliant with PCI 2.1 specification. The ISA bus provides 64mA high drive capability on all data, address, and control lines, which is particularly important for driving multi load ISA expansion cards such as data acquisition and motion control.

6. Hardware monitoring and system management

Monitoring chip: Winbond W83627HF (embedded hardware monitoring).

Monitoring items: CPU temperature (via CN12 external thermistor), system voltage, fan speed (FN1/FN2/FN3, 3-pin speed measurement), chassis opening (JP2).

SMBus: Onboard SMBus interface (CN8), used for reading DIMM SPDs and communicating with monitoring devices.

7. Watchdog timer

Based on logical device 8, the timeout range for CRF5 (control), CRF6 (counting), and CRF7 (status) is 1-255 seconds or 1-255 minutes.
