KONGSBERG's RMP420 Remote Multifunctional I/O Module

In the fields of modern industrial automation and ocean engineering, the stability and accuracy of alarm monitoring and integrated control systems are crucial. As a bridge connecting on-site sensors and host control computers, the performance of input/output (I/O) modules directly determines the response speed and reliability of the entire control system. As a leading global maritime technology provider, Kongsberg Maritime has launched the RMP420 remote multi-purpose input/output module, which has become a benchmark product in the industry due to its excellent multifunctional integration capabilities, redundant communication design, and adaptability in harsh environments. Core Architecture and Multipurpose Design Concept

The original design intention of RMP420 is to meet the flexible requirements of I/O channels in complex industrial scenarios. Its core architecture is based on the concept of "multi-purpose", breaking the limitations of traditional I/O modules with single functionality.

1. 32 channel full software configuration

RMP420 provides 32 on-site input channels, all of which support software configuration. This means that users can flexibly set each channel as analog input (AI), analog output (AO), digital input (DI), or digital output (DO) based on actual on-site needs. The high flexibility under this single topology structure greatly simplifies inventory management and spare parts replacement processes, reducing the full lifecycle cost of the system.

2. Wide compatibility of signal types

In industrial sites, there are various types of sensors with different signal types. RMP420 demonstrates strong compatibility:

Digital signal processing: Supports standard digital input and output, and complies with Namur standard (NE43), capable of accurately identifying wire breakage and short circuit states. Its digital output adopts a short-circuit protection high-end driver. Under 24VDC power supply, the circuit drive trip current can reach about 1.4A, ensuring the reliability of driving the load.

Analog signal processing: Supports 0-4V, 0-10V voltage input and 0-20mA current input, with measurement accuracy up to ± 0.15% of full range. For analog output, the voltage output range is 0-10V, the current output range is 0-20mA, and the accuracy is maintained at ± 0.35% of the full range, meeting the requirements of high-precision control circuits.

Temperature signal acquisition: The module is equipped with an interface for resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) and supports 2-wire or 3-wire PT100 sensors. The temperature measurement range covers -200 ° C to 600 ° C, with an accuracy of ± 0.4% of the full range and a resolution of ± 0.5 ° C. It can adapt to extreme temperature monitoring environments.

Pulse and frequency signals: Two channels can be configured as pulse/frequency/encoder inputs, supporting a maximum pulse counting frequency of 10kHz and possessing Namur standard level conversion capability, suitable for scenarios such as flow meters or speed monitoring.


Redundant communication and electrical isolation technology

In critical alarm and control systems, communication interruptions often imply significant security risks. RMP420 has undergone enhanced design in this regard.

1. Dual redundant RBUS interface

The RMP420 is equipped with dual remote I/O process bus (RBUS) interfaces for communication with the host control computer (RCU). The interface adopts 2x9-pin male D-Sub connectors based on RS485 standard. The dual bus design achieves redundancy in the communication link. When the main communication line fails, the system can seamlessly switch to the backup line, ensuring the continuity of data transmission.

2. Electrical isolation protection

In order to eliminate ground loop interference and protect sensitive circuits, electrical isolation has been implemented between the communication port of RMP420 and other module circuits. This optoelectronic isolation technology effectively prevents the damage of high-voltage surges to the control network on site and improves the overall electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of the system.

3. Loop monitoring function

The module has a channel by channel loop monitoring function. This means that the system can monitor the working status of each I/O channel in real time, detect line faults such as disconnection or short circuit in a timely manner, and achieve preventive maintenance.

High reliability and fault safety mechanism

The industrial environment is full of uncertainty, from power fluctuations to software crashes, any malfunction can lead to catastrophic consequences. RMP420 has built multiple protective nets through a combination of software and hardware fault safety mechanisms.

1. Hardware failure safety

The hardware failure safety response time is set to a minimum of 65 milliseconds. This is the last line of defense implemented through hardware circuits, ensuring that in the event of a complete failure of the main control system, the on-site equipment can enter the preset safe state.
