Introduction: The Evolution of Digital Motion Control

In the context of Industry 4.0, the requirements for precision, response speed, and system flexibility in motion control systems have reached unprecedented heights. Kollmorgen SERVOSTAR ®  The S series, as a high-performance digital servo drive, is specifically designed to meet demanding application scenarios such as machine tool processing, packaging machinery, electronic assembly, and document processing. It not only has strong hardware compatibility to drive Danaher Motion's full range of synchronous servo motors, but also significantly improves system performance through advanced digital control algorithms such as software rotary transformer interfaces and multimodal compensation loops.


Core hardware specifications and naming system

Understanding the model naming of SERVOSTAR S is the first step in proper selection and installation. This series covers a complete product line from small Sx03 to high-power Sx85.

Voltage level and bus voltage: The driver supports two input standards: 115 VAC (corresponding to 160 VDC bus) and 230 VAC (corresponding to 325 VDC bus).

Power coverage range: Taking Sx03 to Sx20 as an example, the rated power covers 0.63 kW to 8.68 kW, which can adapt to industrial needs with different load intensities.

Bus Module: such as PA0800, PA-LM, etc. The PA-LM module is particularly suitable for multi axis applications and can provide stable logic power (+15V, -15V,+8V) for multiple drivers.

Industrial grade safety installation specifications

The installation quality of the servo system directly determines its reliability and safety in operation. According to the manual requirements, the following guidelines must be followed:

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD): The driver contains highly sensitive electronic components inside. Before operation, personnel must discharge themselves and ensure that the product is placed on a conductive surface.

Electrical isolation and grounding: The system must be connected to a reliable Earth Ground. Low impedance grounding is not only a necessary condition for preventing electric shock, but also a core means of suppressing electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) wiring: In order to comply with CE standards, the driver should be installed in a closed switchgear and ensure good metal to metal contact between the metal casing and the backplate.


Electrical connections and system integration

SERVOSTAR S provides rich interfaces for power transmission and signal feedback:

Logical power connection: For specific models such as Sx260 and Sx261, a 24V auxiliary power supply needs to be connected through the interface on the top of the drive.

Enable circuit (C3 interface): This is the hardware access control for the operation of the driver. At least 24V signal must be connected to activate the enable circuit.

Regen Resistors: During load deceleration, the motor feeds back energy to the DC bus. If the inertia is large, an external regeneration resistor must be configured to prevent bus overvoltage (code "o").


Feedback devices and advanced control loops

The core advantage of SERVOSTAR S lies in its flexible feedback processing capability and precise control logic.

Feedback technical support:

Software Resolver: RDC conversion is achieved through a second-order tracking filter, which has the advantages of resolution not changing with speed and increasing system reliability.

Sineniti calibration: The system automatically initializes calibration every time it is powered on, improving positioning accuracy by optimizing feedback signals.

Four layer control structure:

Current/torque loop: The inner loop with the fastest response speed determines the torque output accuracy of the motor.

Velocity Loop: Provides four modes: PI, PDFF, standard pole configuration, and extended pole configuration, which can be flexibly switched through the COMPMODE variable.

Position Loop: Sampling rate up to 2 kHz. Supports pulse tracking (electronic gear mode, OPMODE 4) and point-to-point positioning (OPMODE 8).


MOTIONLINK Debugging Environment and Software Instructions

MOTIONLINK is a graphical configuration tool for SERVOSTAR S, providing engineers with an intuitive user interface.

Startup Wizard: Guide users to complete motor selection, limit setting, and basic parameter distribution.

Recording: Real time capture of current, velocity, and position waveforms through the RECORD command is crucial for evaluating system dynamic characteristics.

Variable management: supported SSV file backup. Users can easily import and export parameters through the "Backup Variables" function.


Guidelines for Fault Monitoring and Troubleshooting

The digital display on the front of the driver can provide real-time feedback on the operating status and error codes:

Flashing minus sign (-): Indicates that the driver has not loaded a valid compensation file or motor parameter, usually occurring after resetting the variable (RSTVAR).

Code "J" (OverSpeed): The feedback speed exceeds the limit set by VOSPD, usually caused by system debugging overshoot or improper parameter tuning.

Code "r" (Feedback Loss): Detected missing rotary signal or disconnected encoder, need to check the feedback cable connection.

Code "P" (PowerStage Fault): Indicates overcurrent, short circuit, or power transistor failure. This fault cannot usually be resolved through a reset signal and the power supply must be restarted.
