SAIA PCD1 series programmable controller: compact automation core

In the fields of building automation, industrial control, and energy management, there are increasingly high requirements for the flexibility, communication capabilities, and cost-effectiveness of controllers. Saia PCD1 series as Saia PCD ®  The smallest flat programmable controller in the family, with powerful CPU, integrated I/O, rich communication interfaces, and modular expansion capabilities, provides an ideal solution for small to medium-sized automation tasks. This article will provide a comprehensive and in-depth technical analysis of the system from the perspectives of series overview, technical specifications of the three main sub series (PCD1.M2xxx, PCD1.Room, PCD1 E-Controller), I/O configuration, communication expansion, installation methods, and typical applications.


Overall positioning of PCD1 series

The Saia PCD1 system adopts a compact and flat design, with all controllers integrated with at least 18 I/O points, and comes standard with data storage, Web/IT functionality (automation server), and multiple standard communication interfaces. Its powerful CPU is capable of successfully addressing small automation challenges. Rich communication options: Ethernet TCP/IP, USB port, onboard RS-485 interface, and via BACnet ®  Or extension options such as Lon IP fully demonstrate the performance potential of PCD1.

According to application scenarios, the PCD1 series is divided into three main branches:

PCD1.M2xxx: Universal compact controller, modular expansion, suitable for small and medium-sized equipment and renovation projects.

PCD1. Room (M2110R1): A controller designed specifically for room automation and HVAC (HeaVAC), suitable for indoor installation.

PCD1 E-Controller (M0160E0): An energy monitoring controller specifically designed for installation in distribution boxes, pre installed with S-Monitoring functionality.


PCD1.M2xxx Series: Compact and Scalable Universal Controllers

The PCD1.M2xxx series is a compact controller with onboard I/O and two additional I/O slots (for PCD2 I/O modules or communication interface modules). Its web/IT functionality, onboard storage, standard communication interfaces, and expansion options provide a good solution for small and medium-sized devices.

2.1 System Characteristics

Up to 50 inputs/outputs can be expanded (in conjunction with RIO PCD3.T66x or T76x)

Up to 8 communication interfaces

Onboard USB and Ethernet interfaces

Large capacity onboard program storage (up to 1 MByte) and data storage (up to 128 MByte file system)

2.6 I/O and Communication Expansion

Slot I/O 0 and I/O 1: Can be inserted into PCD2.M5 series I/O modules or PCD2.F2xxx communication interface modules (up to 2 F2xxx modules, providing up to 4 interfaces).

Slot A: Can accommodate PCD7. F1xxx communication expansion modules (such as RS-232, RS-485/422, Belimo MP Bus, etc.).

Slot M1: Can insert PCD7.Rxxx memory modules for expanding file systems or activating BACnet IP/LON IP firmware.

New analog output module PCD7.W600 (12 bits, 0... 10V, developed specifically for PCD1, inserted into slot A).

PCD1. Room (M2110R1): Room Automation Dedicated Controller

PCD1. Room is a programmable room controller designed specifically for complex room automation and HVAC solutions, providing a wide range of communication options. In addition to integrated I/O, it also provides a free I/O slot for personalized expansion (input/output or communication). The onboard web/IT functionality supports mobile operations. This controller can achieve efficient room automation that complies with EN 15232:2012 energy efficiency levels.

3.1 Technical specifications (main differences from M2xxx)

Program memory: 256 kB Flash

User memory: 128 kB RAM

File System: 8 MB

Integrated communication: Ethernet dual port switch, USB, RS-485 (same as M2xxx)

Automated server: supports Flash, file system FTP、Web、Email、SNMP

3.3 Expansion Limitations and Special Instructions

Only supports one I/O slot (I/O 0): can be inserted into a PCD2.M5 I/O module or a PCD2.F2xxx communication module (up to 1 F2xxx module).

Slot I/O 1 pre installed with PCD2.W525 module: This module is part of the default configuration of the controller, and if removed, the controller will stop running. Therefore, users are not allowed to freely expand using the I/O 1 slot.

The Smart RIO Manager feature is not supported.

Supports S-Bus and Modbus stations, with a maximum of 10 units.

3.4 Communication Expansion and Memory Expansion (Same as M2xxx Series)

Slot A: PDC7.F1xxx Communication Expansion

Slot M1: PCD7.Rxxx flash module, can activate BACnet IP or LON IP

Slot I/O 0: Optional PCD2.F2150 (BACnet MS/TP), PCD2.F2400 (LON FTT10), etc

PCD1 E-Controller (M0160E0): Energy Monitoring Controller for Distribution Box

PCD1.M0160E0 is a compact controller with free programming, pre installed with S-Monitoring application (energy monitoring) at the factory. It is designed specifically for the installation of electrical control cabinets, suitable for distribution units or narrow spaces. In addition to integrating I/O, interface, and Web/IT functions, it also supports multiple protocol connections, making it highly suitable for microcontrollers, communication gateways (EnOcean, KNX, BACnet, etc.), as well as energy consumption data collection, recording, and processing.

4.1 Technical specifications

Program memory: 1 MB Flash

Working memory: 1 MB RAM

File System: 128 MB

Integrated communication: Ethernet (dual port switch), USB, RS-485 (as before)

Automated Server: Supports

Dimensions (W × H × D): 142 × 142 × 60 mm (excluding terminals)

Installation method: Single 35mm top cap rail (DIN EN60715 TH35) or flat installation

4.2 Onboard I/O

Input:

6-way digital input (4+2 interrupt), 15... 30 VDC

2-channel analog input (terminal X1): -10...+10 V, 0... ± 20 mA, Pt1000, Ni1000, Ni1000 L&S, 0... 2.5 k Ω, 12 bits. The default factory configuration is Ni1000 sensor input.

4-channel digital output (24 VDC)

1 PWM output (24 VDC/0.2 A)

Configurable (via PG5):

4-channel digital input or output (terminal X0), factory default configuration is digital input

Watchdog relay (terminal X3)

Note: This model does not have a free I/O slot (no EA slot), only one slot A is used for communication expansion.

4.3 Special Installation Requirements

When installed in the distribution box, a space of 55mm should be left above the DIN rail and 75mm below it.

It is recommended to use elbows or flexible Ethernet cables (such as SlimWire PRO) for Ethernet cables, otherwise it may not be possible to close the distribution box cover.

4.4 Communication and Storage Expansion

Slot A: Supports PCD7.F1105, F1215, F1505, F1805 communication modules (RS-485, RS-232, MP-Bus, etc.).

Slot M1: Supports PCD7.R550M04 (4 MB file system), R560/R562 (BACnet firmware), R580/R582 (LON IP firmware), and PCD7.R610 Micro SD card dock (compatible with PCD7.R-MSD1024).

Parallel running of S-Monitoring and BACnet/LON: Follow the official support page instructions.

4.5 Typical Applications

As a microcontroller or communication gateway (such as converting EnOcean wireless signals to BACnet IP)

Self adhesive labels can be directly printed through the SBC LabelEditor of the PG5 device configurator.

The EPLAN Electric P8 macro can be obtained from the support page or EPLAN data portal for easy engineering planning.

Programming and software support

All PCD1 controllers are programmed using the Saia PG5 programming software suite, which supports IEC 61131-3 languages such as Instruction List (IL), Function Block Diagram (FBD), Structured Text (ST), and Sequential Function Diagram (GRAFTEC). The automated server function allows users to create embedded web pages, monitor and modify process variables through a browser. The S-Monitoring function (pre installed on the E-Controller) provides visualization, trend recording, and alerting of energy consumption data.

Fieldbus: Modbus RTU(RS‑485)、BACnet MS/TP、LON FTT10、M‑Bus、DALI、Belimo MP‑Bus

Building bus: KNX (via IP or external coupler) EIB

Ethernet protocols: BACnet IP, LON IP, Modbus TCP, HTTP (Web Server) FTP、SNMP、Email

Wireless: EnOcean (via external receiver)

Exclusive: S-Bus (Saia's own bus)


Selection Guide and Precautions

Requires large capacity program storage, file system, and dual Ethernet switch: Choose PCD1.M2160.

Only basic Ethernet connection is required, budget is limited: choose PCD1.M2120.

No Ethernet required, only use RS-485 or USB: choose PCD1.M2020.

Room automation applications require a large number of analog inputs/outputs and dedicated room functions: choose PCD1.M2110R1 (note that there is only one free I/O slot and the W525 module is pre installed).

Energy monitoring, distribution box installation, gateway function: Select PCD1.M0160E0 (no I/O expansion slot, but pre installed with S-Monitoring).

Expand communication interface: Select the PCD7.F1xxx or PCD2.F2xxx module according to the required protocol, and pay attention to the 5V bus current limit (maximum 500 mA).

Expand file system or activate BACnet/LON IP: Use the M1 slot's PCD7.Rxxx flash module.
