DEIF 827.4 Power Management Module

The DEIF 827.4 is a versatile power management module designed for generator protection, control, and monitoring applications. This compact unit combines comprehensive protection functions, power measurement, and communication capabilities, making it ideal for single generator installations and distributed power systems. The 827.4 provides the essential functions required for reliable generator operation in standby, prime power, and marine applications.

Key Protection Functions

  • Overcurrent protection with selectable time-current curves

  • Earth fault protection with configurable sensitivity

  • Overvoltage and undervoltage protection

  • Overfrequency and underfrequency protection

  • Reverse power protection

  • Phase sequence and unbalance protection


Protection Functionality

The 827.4 provides a comprehensive suite of protection functions to ensure safe generator operation. Overcurrent protection features selectable inverse time characteristics including standard inverse, very inverse, and extremely inverse curves, enabling coordination with other protection devices. Earth fault protection is configurable for both residual current measurement and core balance CT connection. Voltage and frequency protection includes adjustable thresholds and time delays, allowing precise coordination with generator characteristics and system requirements. Reverse power protection prevents motoring of the generator, protecting the engine from damage.

Power Measurement and Monitoring

In addition to protection functions, the 827.4 continuously measures key electrical parameters for system monitoring:

  • Three-phase voltages and line voltages

  • Three-phase currents and neutral current

  • Frequency

  • Active power, reactive power, and apparent power

  • Power factor

  • Active and reactive energy (kWh, kvarh)

  • Harmonic distortion analysis up to the 15th order

All measured values are available via the communication interface for integration with supervisory systems.

Communication and Integration

The 827.4 supports Modbus RTU communication over RS-485, enabling integration with supervisory control and data acquisition systems, programmable logic controllers, and building management systems. The communication interface provides access to all measured values, status information, protection settings, and alarm conditions. The module can also receive remote control commands for breaker operation and reset functions. Optional communication modules provide support for other protocols including PROFIBUS and CAN bus.

Configuration and Programming

The 827.4 is configured using DEIF configuration software, which provides a user-friendly interface for setting protection parameters, defining input and output functions, and establishing communication settings. The software enables offline configuration, which can be uploaded to the device or saved for documentation. Multiple configuration files can be stored and deployed across multiple units, simplifying commissioning of installations with several modules.

User Interface

The front panel features a graphical LCD display with backlight, providing clear visibility of measured values and configuration menus. Navigation buttons allow users to scroll through measurement screens, view event logs, and acknowledge alarms. Status LEDs provide immediate visual indication of module health, alarm conditions, and output status. The intuitive interface reduces training requirements for operators and maintenance personnel.

Event Logging

An integrated event log records protection operations, configuration changes, and system events with time stamps. This information is essential for post-fault analysis, helping engineers understand the sequence of events leading to protection operations and identify potential system weaknesses. The event log can be accessed locally through the display or remotely via the communication interface.
