GE D20MX Remote Terminal Unit for Substation Automation

The GE D20MX is a high-performance modular remote terminal unit designed for substation automation, distribution automation, and SCADA applications. This RTU provides flexible input/output configurations, robust processing capabilities, and extensive communication options, making it an ideal solution for electric utilities, industrial facilities, and critical infrastructure applications. The D20MX is part of the GE Digital D20 product family, known for reliability and scalability in harsh electrical environments.

Modular I/O Architecture

The D20MX features a modular I/O architecture that allows system integrators to configure the RTU with the exact mix of input and output channels required for each application. Available I/O modules include digital input modules for status monitoring, digital output modules for control applications, analog input modules for transducer measurements, and analog output modules for remote setpoint control. The modular design allows for easy expansion as application requirements grow.

Processing and Data Acquisition

The RTU incorporates high-speed processing capabilities for real-time data acquisition and control. The processor executes multiple tasks simultaneously, including scanning I/O points, processing logic, managing communication ports, and storing historical data. Data acquisition rates are configurable to meet specific application requirements, with millisecond resolution for time-critical applications. The RTU supports both polled and report-by-exception data reporting, optimizing communication bandwidth.

Communication Capabilities

The D20MX supports a comprehensive suite of communication protocols for integration with SCADA master stations, programmable logic controllers, and intelligent electronic devices. Standard protocols include DNP 3.0, Modbus RTU and TCP, IEC 60870-5-101, and IEC 60870-5-104. The RTU can operate as both a master and slave on different communication ports simultaneously. Redundant communication paths can be configured to ensure continuous operation in the event of communication failures.

Substation Automation Integration

The D20MX is designed for seamless integration into substation automation systems. It can interface with protection relays, meters, and other IEDs through serial or Ethernet connections, aggregating data from multiple devices for reporting to the SCADA master. The RTU supports GOOSE messaging for IEC 61850 environments, enabling peer-to-peer communication between intelligent devices. Integrated logic capabilities allow the RTU to perform local control functions without SCADA intervention.

Data Logging and Event Recording

The RTU includes extensive data logging and event recording capabilities. Historical data can be stored for trend analysis and compliance reporting. Event records capture all status changes, control operations, and system events with precise time stamps. Sequence of events recording with millisecond resolution enables accurate reconstruction of fault sequences. Data logs can be retrieved locally or remotely via communication interfaces.

Remote configuration and firmware upgrades are supported via communication interfaces.
