Omron GRT1-PRT PROFIBUS DP-V1 Communication Adapter for SmartSlice I/O

The Omron GRT1-PRT is a communication adapter that connects Omron SmartSlice modular I/O systems to PROFIBUS DP-V1 networks. It serves as the gateway between a PROFIBUS DP master (such as a Siemens PLC) and up to 64 SmartSlice I/O units. This compact module enables seamless integration of Omron’s flexible slice I/O into mainstream PROFIBUS-based automation architectures.

Network Specifications

The GRT1-PRT operates as a PROFIBUS DP-V1 slave device. Network connector: 9-pin D-Sub female connector with screw locking. The interface includes integrated network termination resistors selectable via DIP switch. The module draws its network interface power internally, requiring no external supply for communications. I/O Capacity

The GRT1-PRT supports up to 1,024 inputs and 1,024 outputs (128 bytes each of input and output data). It can control a maximum of 64 SmartSlice I/O units connected downstream. The I/O power supply is 24V DC (20.4 to 26.4V DC) with a maximum current of 4A provided through the slice bus. Status flags occupy 1 word (16 bits) of data and include information on communication status and unit health.

Parameter Backup and Restore

The GRT1-PRT includes functionality for parameter backup and restore. Up to 2 KB of configuration data per I/O unit can be stored in the adapter’s non-volatile memory. When a SmartSlice unit is replaced, the adapter automatically restores the configuration parameters to the new unit, eliminating the need for manual reconfiguration and reducing downtime.

Configuration and Setup

The GRT1-PRT is configured using a GSD file (Generic Station Description) provided by Omron, which is imported into the PROFIBUS master’s engineering software. The adapter supports DPV1 Class 1 and Class 2 services, enabling acyclic data exchange for parameterization and diagnostics. Device-specific parameters such as station address (1 to 99) are set via rotary switches on the front panel.

Diagnostic Features

Front-panel LEDs indicate Unit Power, Network Status, I/O Power, and Unit Error conditions. The adapter reports detailed diagnostic information to the PROFIBUS master, including configuration faults, I/O unit failures, and power supply issues. The status flag word in the I/O data includes bits for communication unit status, allowing the master PLC to monitor the health of the entire SmartSlice system.


Compatibility

The GRT1-PRT is compatible with all GRT1-series SmartSlice I/O units, including digital I/O, analog I/O, temperature input, counter, and specialty modules. Communication is fully compliant with PROFIBUS DP-V1 standard IEC 61158, ensuring interoperability with any PROFIBUS DP master from major vendors including Siemens, ABB, Schneider Electric, and Phoenix Contact.

Power Distribution

The unit’s internal power supply derives its operating power from the PROFIBUS network interface. Separate I/O power (24V DC) must be supplied to the GRT1-PRT via the spring-clamp terminals, which is then distributed to downstream SmartSlice units via the internal slice bus. The I/O power supply must be rated for the total current consumption of all connected I/O units.

Typical applications include distributed I/O systems in process automation, material handling, manufacturing lines, and building automation where PROFIBUS is the preferred fieldbus.
