The word biomass will feel strange at first hearing, but it is always distributed around people. Bark and straw for cooking are renewable sources of organic carbon, which are often burned for the purpose of convenient treatment, but it is easy to cause environmental pollution.

Zhanjiang's agricultural and rural development has a solid foundation and broad space, with a total planting area of more than 4.2 million mu of grain crops and more than 3.3 million mu of eucalyptus trees, and a variety of cash crops, making it a favored place for biomass power plants. According to reports, hundreds of thousands of acres of eucalyptus trees in Zhanjiang are felled every year, and the remaining sugarcane leaves after treatment in the sugarcane forest become the raw material source of Zhanjiang biomass power plant.

"Biomass power generation is the use of these wastes as fuel, the use of centralized processing of modern equipment, to achieve the control of various emissions, continuous energy conversion, for power generation or heating." Zhanjiang biomass power generation company party secretary, executive director, general manager Huang Cong said.

Huang Cong introduced that the biomass power generation project is mainly connected with the processing plants in Zhanjiang and the surrounding areas to purchase bark, leaves, tree heads, bagasse, fruit shells, straw and other agricultural and forestry wastes, which are purchased from the processing plant and then transported to the power plant. The annual purchase fund reaches 300 million yuan, realizing industry feeding agriculture, driving villagers to achieve employment at their doorstep, and promoting the sustainable development of local society.

Established in September 2008, Zhanjiang Biomass Power Generation Company belongs to Guangdong Energy Group Co., LTD. The power generation project is a key construction project in Guangdong Province, with an installed capacity of 2×50MW biomass generator set, which started construction in March 2010, and two units were completed and put into operation in August 2011 and November 2011 respectively, which is the world's largest single capacity and total installed capacity of biomass power plant built at that time.

According to reports, as of the end of June 2022, Zhanjiang Biomass Power Generation Company has sent a total of 6.827 billion degrees of green electricity to the Internet, consumed about 10.2561 million tons of agricultural and forestry waste, saved a total of 3.075 million tons of standard coal, and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by about 4.2416 million tons. Greatly reduce the pollution of groundwater caused by natural decay of biomass fuel and the atmospheric pollution caused by farmers' on-site incineration of agricultural and forestry waste.

Emission reduction and carbon fixation enable green energy development

Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the National Development and Reform Commission issued the "Agriculture and rural carbon emission reduction and sequestration implementation Plan" pointed out that according to local conditions to promote the application of biomass energy, solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy and other green energy models, increase the supply of clean energy in rural areas. We will promote the substitution of renewable energy for heating, cooking, agricultural production and processing in rural areas, and strengthen energy efficiency.

The industry generally believes that biomass energy is the only energy in the world with carbon reduction, carbon negative and carbon neutral functions; It is the only renewable carbon source, or a clean energy with natural energy storage characteristics, and has great potential for high-quality agricultural development and carbon emission reduction and sequestration.

Huang Cong introduced that compared with traditional coal-fired power generation, biomass power generation uses biomass such as agricultural and forestry waste as fuel, which has little impact on the atmospheric environment. Compared with coal, the sulfur content of biomass fuel is extremely low, almost zero. Therefore, in the process of emission to the atmosphere, the sulfur dioxide content of the power plant is almost zero, and the nitrogen oxide is also stably controlled within 200mg/m3, which is about 100 under normal circumstances, far better than the emission standard. "The carbon dioxide emitted by living organisms when they burn is roughly equivalent to the carbon dioxide absorbed by photosynthesis when they grow, so biomass power generation produces zero emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide."
