IMPORTANT SAFETY AND USE DISCLAIMER: Emphasises that the use of the product is subject to relevant safety standards and that the user should ensure that the application meets performance and safety requirements. Rockwell Automation is not responsible for consequential damages resulting from the use of the product. Examples in this document are for reference only and may not be reproduced without written permission.
Pre-installation preparation: Prepare M4 or M5 (#10 or #12) hardware, including screws and washers, to secure the chassis; prepare Phillips screwdriver and drill bit . Specify the number of mounting lugs for the different chassis models, 4 for the 1746-A4, 4 for the 1746-A7, 6 for the 1746-A10, and 8 for the 1746-A13. Gather documentation for the processor, power supply, communications, and I/O modules to guide the installation.
Installation Procedure
Allow for installation space: Allow for the appropriate space based on the number and type of chassis connections. If connecting up to three chassis, ensure specific spacing for heat dissipation and maintenance. When connecting two 1746-A13 chassis vertically, the distance between them should not exceed 15.3 cm, otherwise it will affect the cable connection.
Mounting the chassis: Drill holes in the back panel of the enclosure, taking care to avoid metal shavings from entering the chassis and completing the drilling before the processor and I/O modules are mounted. Install the top mounting lug hardware, using the specified screws and washers to ensure a secure installation. Slide the chassis over the installed hardware and tighten the screws. During installation, note that the chassis mounting lugs should be flat, or they will need to be adjusted with additional washers to prevent the chassis from warping, damaging the backplane, and affecting connections. Depending on the chassis model, install the remaining mounting lug hardware, and reserve grounding lugs for 4-bay chassis.
Grounding: Verify the grounding configuration and use a ground bus to reduce connection resistance. Install a central ground bus to provide a common connection for chassis grounding. Connect the equipment grounding conductor to ensure reliable grounding, using specific gauge wire. Connect the equipment grounding conductor to the grounding busbar, using the correct connection method, e.g., bolted connections, and ensuring that the connection is secure. Connect the earth busbar to the earth electrode system, using the required conductors to ensure effective earthing.
Install chassis interconnect cables (optional): If more than one chassis is to be connected, install chassis interconnect cables before connecting power supplies to expand the number of I/O slots.
Install the I/O module and power supply: Follow the installation manuals for the module and power supply to install the I/O module into the chassis, and be careful to remove the protective labels on the top of the power supply when connecting it to the power supply.
Specifications
Dimensions and Weight: The 1746-A4 measures 17.7 x 17.1 x 14.5 cm and weighs approximately the specified value; other chassis models have corresponding dimensions and weight specifications.
Electrical: Backplane current is 10A at 5.1V dc and 2.88A at 24V dc for all models. Operating temperature range is 0°C to +60°C, storage temperature is -40°C to +85°C, and relative humidity is 5% to 95% non-condensing.
Certifications: UL Listed for industrial control equipment in the USA and Canada and meets hazardous location standards; CE Marked for compliance with the EU EMC Directive and other relevant requirements; and compliant with the Australian Radiocommunications Act.
Advantages in terms of compatibility
Module compatibility: 1746-A4 chassis is designed for SLC 500 series, which is perfectly compatible with the rich processors, communication modules, I/O modules and power supplies of this series. It can be matched with processors with different functions, such as 1747-L553, to meet the needs of sequential control, motion control, process control and other diverse control requirements. It can work with all kinds of communication modules to achieve data interaction with other devices, and supports a variety of network protocols. A variety of I/O modules can be flexibly configured to meet the acquisition and control needs of different signal types and quantities. Adaptable to the power supply in the series to ensure stable power supply.
System compatibility: Supports multiple chassis connection and expansion, up to three SLC chassis (30 I/O slots) can be connected to meet the system scale expansion requirements. When connecting, communication between chassis can be achieved through cables such as 1746-C9, which is convenient for building large-scale distributed control systems. It complies with a variety of international certification standards, such as UL, CE, etc. This enables it to be used in different regions of the world. This enables it to operate stably in industrial environments in different regions of the world, and adapt to the requirements of electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility and other norms in different countries and regions.
