ADLINK NuPRO-A301 PICMG 1.0 Single Board Computer: Professional Guide for On site Hardware Debugging and System Maintenance

In the fields of factory automation, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and traditional industrial control, PICMG 1.0 specification single board computers (SBC) remain the preferred low-cost solution for many old production lines and new projects due to their mature PCI/ISA scalability and long lifecycle. ADLINK NuPRO-A301 as an Intel based ®  Full Sized PICMG 1.0 SBC for 945GC/ICH7 chipset, supporting LGA775 packaged Core ™ 2 Duo, Pentium Dual Core, Pentium 4, and Celeron processors are available, along with 4 SATA 3Gb/s ports, dual serial ports (COM1 supports RS-232/422/485), PCIe Gigabit Ethernet ports, and ISA bus expansion capabilities, making it an ideal choice for balancing performance and cost. However, the harsh environment of industrial sites and the complexity of system configurations often lead to startup failures, peripheral abnormalities, or performance degradation. This article is based on the official user manual of NuPRO-A301 and combines frontline maintenance experience to provide you with a detailed hardware debugging, BIOS optimization, and troubleshooting guide to ensure the continuous and stable operation of your device.


Chapter 1: Open box inspection and anti-static operation specifications

NuPRO-A301 is extremely sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). The manual clearly requires:

“The NuPRO-A301 must be protected from static discharge and physical shock. Never remove any of the socketed parts except at a static-free workstation. Use the anti-static bag shipped with the product to handle the board. Wear a grounded wrist strap when installing and/or servicing.”

Operation points:

The board must be disassembled and assembled on the anti-static workbench, wearing a grounding wristband, and only touching the edge of the board.

Check packaging contents: In addition to the card body, it should include SATA data cable, SATA power cable, Print+COM board cable, COM board cable, USB board cable, PS/2 Y-shaped cable, driver CD, and user manual.

Attention: The onboard audio function requires the optional IP-ALCS20 audio sub card (AC'97 specification). If you need to use it, please contact your sales representative separately.


Chapter 2: Core Component Installation - CPU, Heat Sink, and Memory

2.1 Key points for LGA775 CPU installation

NuPRO-A301 supports Intel Core ™ 2 Duo (such as E4300), Pentium Dual Core (E2160), Pentium 4 (651/551/531), and Celeron (440/D 352/341) processors, FSB supports 533/800 MHz. When installing the CPU, strictly follow the following steps:

Release the load rod, uncover the load plate, and remove the protective cover.

Align the golden triangle mark of the CPU with the bottom left corner of the Socket 775 base, place it vertically, and do not press hard to prevent the needle from bending. Manual warning: "The CPU fits the socket in only one orientation. Do not force it into the socket to avoid damaging it

Close the load plate and fasten the load rod.

Warning: Before installing the CPU, all power must be disconnected and avoid touching the socket contacts, otherwise it may cause the product warranty to expire.

2.2 "Hard indicators" for radiator selection and installation

NuPRO-A301 must operate under the condition that the internal ambient temperature of the chassis does not exceed 60 ° C, and must be equipped with an active heat sink specifically designed for LGA775. Although the manual does not list specific recommended models, it emphasizes the following core principles:

Captive screws must be used for heat sinks, and push pin heat sinks are strictly prohibited - "They may exercise too much tension on the PCB and cause the board to flex, resulting in damage to the SBC

Before installation, the backplate should be fixed to the bottom of the board and evenly coated with thermal conductive silicone grease.

Fully tightening a screw at one corner before beginning to tighten the other screws may be due to uneven pressure to be applied to the CPU and damage the component and/or SBC

The fan power cord must be connected to the onboard CN1 (CPU fan) interface (4-pin: GND,+12V, Tachometer, Speed Control), supporting PWM speed regulation and speed monitoring.

Important reminder: After installing the radiator, when taking out the board, you must support the edge with both hands to fully support the weight of the radiator and avoid deformation caused by the board hanging in the air.

2.3 DDR2 Memory Installation and Dual Channel Configuration

NuPRO-A301 provides two 240 pin DIMM slots (DIMM1/DIMM2), supporting DDR2 533/667 MHz with a maximum capacity of 2GB. The dual channel configuration requires DIMM1 and DIMM2 to be installed with memory modules of the same capacity, and it is recommended to have the same brand, model, and CL latency. When installing the memory, first open the buckles at both ends of the slot outward, align the anti mistake notch, and insert vertically with force until the buckles automatically lock.

Chapter 3: Jumper Configuration and Key Interface Definition

3.1 AT/ATX mode selection (JP1)

NuPRO-A301 works by default in ATX mode (JP1 pins 1-2 OPEN). If you need to use a traditional AT power supply (direct power on), you need to short-circuit pins 1-2 of JP1 (ALWAYS_SON), and the system will automatically start when powered on, without the need for a front panel switch.

3.2 Clearing CMOS (JP2)

When BIOS settings are incorrect and prevent startup, use JP2 to clear CMOS data:

Shut down and unplug the power cord

Move the jump cap from 1-2 (Normal) to 2-3 (Clear CMOS)

After powering on for a few seconds, power off and restore the jump cap to 1-2

Power on again and enter BIOS to reset

Manual prompt: "Setting a value of 65535 means no hard disk" - When manually setting IDE hard disk parameters, if Precomp/Landing Zone is set to 65535, this function is not available.

3.3 COM2 Serial Port Mode Switching (JPB2)

COM2 supports multiple modes of RS-232/422/485 (with/without terminal resistors), configured through JPB2 jumper group (8 pins in total):

Attention: In RS-232 mode, 7-8 must be short circuited (ON); In RS-422/485 mode, 7-8 is OFF. The DB-9 baffle of COM2 supports both RS-232 (J1) and RS-422/485 (J2) outputs, and the corresponding pins should be selected according to the actual mode when wiring.

3.4 Key precautions for power connection

NuPRO-A301 needs to be connected to CN4 (ATX 12V 4-pin power interface) to provide+12V auxiliary power supply for the CPU. The manual emphasizes that "The ATX 12V power connector must be connected to provide efficient power to the SBC in either ATX or AT modes." If the connection is missed, the system will not start.

The front panel connector (JPB1) integrates power indicator light, hard drive indicator light, reset, power switch, and buzzer. Attention: By default, short-circuit pins 2-4 to output audio to the onboard buzzer; If you need to use the chassis speaker, you need to connect pins 2, 4, 6, and 8. Short circuiting the ATX power switch signal (pin 15 ATX_PWRON #) to ground (pin 20) can trigger a soft power on.


Chapter 4: BIOS Deep Configuration - From Basic to Advanced Tuning

NuPRO-A301 uses Phoenix AwardBIOS, press the "Del" key to enter when booting up. The following are key configuration items that directly affect system stability and functionality.

4.1 Standard CMOS Features

IDE Channel Master/Slave and SATA Channels 0-3: IDE/SATA devices for each channel can be configured separately. Support IDE HDD Auto detection to automatically detect hard disk parameters. Access Mode can be selected as CHS/LBA/Large/Auto, it is recommended to keep Auto.

Drive A: Configure the floppy drive type (if using a floppy drive, it cannot be set to None).

Halt On: can be set to "All, But Keyboard", etc., to control the pause behavior when POST encounters errors.

4.2 Advanced BIOS Features

CPU Feature submenu: Includes Delay Prior to Thermal (optional 4/8/16/32 minutes), Limit CPUID MaxVal (recommended disabled to support WinXP), Execute Disable Bit (hardware antivirus, recommended enabled).

Hard Disk Boot Priority: Set the hard disk boot priority (specific hard disk or USB-HDD can be specified).

Virus Warning: When enabled, write operations to the hard disk boot sector will issue a warning, effectively defending against boot viruses.

Quick Power On Self Test: Skip some POST tests and shorten startup time when enabled.

Boot Device Priority: Set the first/second/third boot device (such as Hard Disk, CDROM, LS120, etc.).

Security Option: When set to System, a password is required for both booting and entering the BIOS; If set to Setup, only a password is required to enter BIOS.

MPS Version Control for OS: It is recommended to set it to 1.4 for multiprocessor systems.

4.3 Advanced Chipset Features

DRAM Timing Selectable: It is recommended to set it to By SPD, where the memory SPD automatically determines the timing; If set to Manual, parameters such as CAS and RAS can be manually adjusted.

SLP_S4 # Attribute Width: Control the sleep signal width and keep it at default (1-2 seconds).

System BIOS Cacheable/Video BIOS Cacheable: It is recommended to set both to Enabled to improve performance, but they can be temporarily disabled if a system exception occurs.

Memory Hold at 15M-16M: Only enabled when using an old ISA card (which requires this address space), usually kept disabled.

VGA Settings:

PEG/OChip VGA Control: Optional Auto, Onchip VGA (onboard), or PEG Port (external PCIe graphics card).

On Chip Frame Buffer Size: can be set to 1MB or 8MB, recommended 8MB.

DVMT Mode: Optional Fixed, DVMT, or Both. DVMT mode dynamically allocates video memory (up to 224MB), recommended for use.

Boot Display: Auto or CRT can be selected. If using a VGA display, keep Auto on.

4.4 Integrated Peripherals Settings

PCI Express LAN submenu

82574L Giga LAN_1: Enable/disable onboard gigabit network card.

PCI Express PME: Enable power management event wake-up function.

82574L PXE ROM: Supports network boot (PXE) when enabled, suitable for diskless workstations.

On Chip IDE Device submenu

IDE HDD Block Mode: It is recommended to enable it to improve IDE hard disk transfer efficiency.

On Chip Primary/Secondary PCI IDE: Enable primary/secondary IDE channels (NuPRO-A301 only provides the primary IDE physical interface, but the chipset supports two channels).

IDE Primary/Secondary Master/Slave PIO/UDMA: It is recommended to set all to Auto for automatic optimization by BIOS.

On Chip Serial ATA: Key Settings! Optional Disabled/Auto/Combined Mode/Enhanced Mode/SATA only.

Enhanced Mode: SATA and PATA work independently and can support up to 6 devices simultaneously (4 SATA+2 PATA), recommended for Windows XP and above systems.

Combined Mode: Maps SATA to a traditional IDE channel, suitable for older systems.

SATA Port Speed Settings: Optional GEN I (SATA-150) or GEN II (SATA-300), depending on the type of hard drive.

Onboard Device submenu

USB Keyboard Support/USB Mouse Support: It is recommended to set both to Enabled for using USB keyboard and mouse in DOS or BIOS interfaces.

AC97 Audio: If an IP-ALCS20 audio daughter card is installed, it needs to be set to Enabled.

Super I/O Device submenu (Super I/O)

Onboard FDC Controller: Enable/disable the floppy drive controller.

Onboard Serial Port 1/Port 2: Set the I/O address and IRQ for COM1/COM2. Commonly used: 3F8/IRQ4 (COM1), 2F8/IRQ3 (COM2). If there is a conflict, it can be changed to 3E8/IRQ4 or 2E8/IRQ3.

Onboard Parallel Port: Set the parallel port address (378/IRQ7 is a common standard, but 278/IRQ5 or 3BC/IRQ7 can also be selected).

Parallel Port Mode: Optional Normal, EPP, ECP, ECP+EPP. EPP/ECP can improve bidirectional transmission speed, but requires peripheral support.

PWRON After PWR Fail: Set the behavior after mains power restoration - On, Off, Former Sts. It is recommended to set the unmanned scenario to On.

Watch Dog Timer Select: Onboard watchdog time selection, options include Disabled, 10/20/30/40 seconds, 1/2/4 minutes. It is recommended to cooperate with watchdog refresh in the application, and the system will automatically reset after timeout.

4.5 Power Management Setup

ACPI Function: Must be set to Enabled to support power management for the operating system.

Power Management: Min Saving, Max Saving, and User Defined can be selected. It is recommended to set User Defined flexibly.

Video Off Method: Recommended DPMS (Display Power Management Signaling).

Suspend Mode: Set the idle time for the system to enter a suspended state (which can be set to 1-30 minutes or disabled).

HDD Power Down: Set the idle time for the hard drive to stop running (1-7 minutes or Disabled).

Soft Off by PWR-BTTN: Set to Instant Off or Delay 4 Sec.

Wake Up by PCI Card/Power On by Ring/Resume by Alarm: Enable network wake-up, MODEM wake-up, or timed power on as needed.

4.6 PnP/PCI configuration

PNP OS Installed: If the operating system supports PnP (such as Windows XP), set it to Yes and the OS will manage the resources; Otherwise set to No and managed by BIOS.

Init Display First: Optional PCI Slot (external graphics card priority) or Onboard (onboard VGA priority).

Reset Configuration Data: When installing new hardware causes a conflict that prevents startup, it can be set to Enabled to clear ESCD.

Resources Controlled By: It is recommended to maintain Auto (ESCD) and have BIOS automatically allocate interrupts and DMA. If using an old ISA card, it can be changed to Manual and IRQ/DMA can be manually retained.

4.7 PC Health Status

This page displays real-time system temperature, CPU temperature, fan speed, and key voltages (CPU Vcore, VDIMM,+12V,+5V,+3.3V, VBAT, etc.). If the temperature is too high or the voltage is abnormal (such as+12V below 11V), the power supply and heat dissipation should be checked immediately.

4.8 Frequency/Voltage Control

Auto Detect PCI Clk: It is recommended to enable it to automatically detect whether there are devices in the PCI slot. If there are no devices, do not send clock signals to reduce EMI.

Spread Spectrum: When enabled, it can reduce electromagnetic interference (by modulating clock frequency), but it may affect timing stability. The default setting is Disabled.

Chapter 5: Watchdog Timer Programming Guide

The built-in watchdog of NuPRO-A301 is implemented through the Super I/O chip (IT8712F), supporting timeouts of 1-255 seconds or minutes. The appendix of the manual provides complete assembly code examples, and the core process is as follows:

Enter extended function mode: Write 0x87 twice to I/O port 0x2E (unlock configuration register).

Select logical device: Write 0x07 to 0x2E, and then write 0x08 to 0x2F (select device 8, i.e. watchdog).

Set counting units and initial values:

Write 0x00 (in seconds) or 0x08 (in minutes) to CRF5 (register 0xF5).

Write the timeout value to CRF6 (register 0xF6) (e.g. 05h represents 5 seconds/minute).

Enable watchdog (write 0xC0 to CRF7).

Exit configuration mode: Write 0xAA to 0x2E.

In practical applications, it is necessary to periodically refresh (rewrite the count value) in the application program to prevent timeout reset. If disabled, write 0 to the count value.


Chapter 6: Driver Installation Sequence and Special Precautions

The driver for NuPRO-A301 is located on the accompanying CD and is installed in the following order: chipset driver → display driver → network card driver → ISA driver → audio driver (optional).

6.1 Chipset Driver (Intel 945G)

Path: Chipset infins_autol.zip, after installation, make the operating system recognize the functions of ICH7 South Bridge and 945GC North Bridge.

6.2 Display Driver (Intel GMA 950)

Path: VGA win2k_xp14324.zip, supports DirectX 9, maximum shared 224MB of video memory, resolution up to 2048 × 1536@75Hz .

6.3 Network Card Driver (Intel 82574L)

Path: Ethernet PRO2KXP-v13_1_2.rar, supports Wake On LAN.

6.4 ISA Driver (IT8888 PCI to ISA Bridge)

Due to Windows not automatically recognizing the bridge, manual installation is required:

Open Device Manager and find 'Other PCI Bridge Devices'.

Right click to update the driver and select 'Install from list or specified location'.

Point to the CD ISA directory and install ite-INF.

After installation, ISA bus devices can only work normally (note: IT8888 does not support DMA, only PIO).

6.5 Audio Driver (optional IP-ALCS20)

Path: Audio WDM-R203. zip. Before installation, AC97 Audio (Integrated Peripherals → Onboard Device) needs to be enabled in the BIOS.


Chapter 7: Quick Troubleshooting Table for Common Malfunctions

Troubleshooting steps for possible causes of fault phenomena

No response when powered on, fan not running, ATX 12V not connected, power failure or JP1 setting error. Check if CN4 is plugged in tightly and test power output; If using AT power supply, check if JP1 is short circuited

Power on but no display. CPU not installed, poor memory contact, graphics card conflict. Reinstall CPU and memory, clear CMOS (JP2), check Init Display First setting

The system repeatedly restarts due to poor heat dissipation and insufficient power supply. Monitor the PC Health temperature and replace the high-power power supply

The operating system cannot find the hard drive (SATA) On Chip Serial ATA mode setting error. Change to Enhanced or Combined mode and check the SATA cable

Serial communication garbled or no data. COM2 jumper mode does not match the device. Configure JPB2 correctly based on device type (RS-232/422/485)

USB keyboard is invalid under DOS. Legacy USB is not turned on. Enable USB keyboard support in Onboard Device

ISA card cannot work. ISA driver is not installed or there is an IRQ conflict. Install ISA driver and reserve IRQ for ISA in PnP/PCI configuration

Check if Watch Dog Timer Select is enabled in BIOS and run sample code to test if the watchdog does not trigger reset, incorrect configuration or application program is not feeding the dog

No audio output, AC97 Audio not enabled or daughter card not installed. Check if the BIOS is enabled and confirm that the IP-ALCS20 daughter card is securely connected
