Atlas Copco Power Focus 4000 Controller Configuration and Troubleshooting Complete Guide

In bolt assembly for automobiles, aerospace, and general industries, the Atlas Copco Power Focus 4000 (PF4000) controller, with its modular design, rich tightening strategies, and powerful network capabilities, has become the core control platform for the Tensor series of electric tightening tools. Whether it's debugging a new production line or maintaining old equipment, engineers need to have a deep understanding of the programming logic, hardware connections, and fault diagnosis methods of PF4000. This article is based on the PF4000 system manual (software version W7.0), starting from practical applications, systematically sorting out the key points of controller configuration, common function settings, common problems, and event code interpretation, providing on-site engineers with a practical guide that can be consulted at any time.

System Overview and Core Components

PF4000 is the fourth generation tightening controller of Atlas Copco, which supports various tool models such as Tensor S, ST, DS and ETX, and provides two operation interfaces, Compact (compact) and Graph (graphical interface). Its core components include:

RBU (Fast Backup Unit): Software authorization and configuration backup module, divided into gold, silver, copper, X, DS and other levels according to functions. RBU Gold unlocks full functionality (Cell Job, Sync synchronization, etc.), Silver supports multi-level Pset and Job, Bronze only provides basic tightening.

ToolsTalk PF: PC programming monitoring software that enables offline programming, real-time monitoring, and data analysis through RS232 or Ethernet connection.

I/O bus and accessories: Supports accessories such as Socket selector, StackLight, I/O Expander, etc., and expands input and output through a dedicated bus.

When the system starts, PF will check the consistency between the RBU and controller configurations. If they are not consistent, it will prompt the user to choose to use the configuration in the controller or RBU, which provides convenience for quickly replacing the controller.

Pset programming core parameters and strategy selection

Pset (parameter set) is the basic unit of tightening control, including control strategy, torque/angle limits, speed/slope, time parameters, etc. Correctly setting Pset is a prerequisite for ensuring the quality of tightening.

2.1 Control Strategy

PF4000 supports the following main strategies:

Tq con (torque control): only controls torque, suitable for general connections.

Tq con/ang mon (torque control+angle monitoring): After the torque reaches the target, monitor whether the angle is within the limit, used to detect slipping or thread deformation.

Tq con/ang con (AND) and (OR): Simultaneously control torque and angle. The AND mode requires both to meet the standard to be considered OK, while the OR mode requires either to meet the standard to stop the machine.

Ang con/tk mon (angle control+torque monitoring): mainly used in angle control scenarios (such as pre setting before yield point control).

DS con (DS tool specific): Based on current estimation of torque, suitable for scenarios that do not require high-precision sensors.

2.2 Tightening Strategy

One stage: Single speed tightening, simple and fast.

Two stages: high-speed first stage+brief pause+low-speed second stage, which can reduce joint looseness.

Quick step: Two stage without pause, switch speed directly.

Ergo ramp: The second stage of torque increases linearly, providing consistent operating feel and reducing reaction force.

Zoom step: Reduce speed to the set percentage (2%~20%) when approaching the target to improve accuracy.

2.3 Quick check of key parameters

Cycle start [P110]: Define the starting torque value for tightening, usually set at 5% of the maximum torque of the tool (10% for DS tools).

Final target [P113]: Target torque.

Final tq min/max [P112/P114]: Qualified torque upper and lower limits.

Rundown complete [P116]: End torque of the fitting phase, used for angle measurement starting point.

End time [P141]: The waiting time after the torque drops below Cycle complete. If it exceeds the time limit, the cycle is considered to have ended.

Practical advice: For soft joints (such as gasket sealing), it is recommended to use Two stages or Quick steps, and match with a smaller Step 2 speed (such as 20%~30%); Hard joints (metal to metal) can use One stage+Zoom step for quick response.

Autoset and Fast Programming

The Autoset function can automatically adapt to the characteristics of the connector. Operation steps: Click "AutoSet" on the ToolsTalk PF or Graph interface, enter the target torque, and then tighten it 3-10 times. PF will automatically calculate appropriate parameters such as Step 1 speed and Ramp. Note: Autoset is only applicable to torque control strategies (Tq con/ang mon) and requires the tool to be properly connected and calibrated.

Quick programming is suitable for simple scenarios, where only the target torque and joint angle (about 30 ° for hard joints and>100 ° for soft joints) need to be set, and the system will automatically generate Pset.
