In the field of industrial automation, the installation and configuration of programmable controllers (PCs) as core control devices directly affect the stability and reliability of system operation. As important members of the C200H family, Omron C200HX, C200HG, and C200HE series PLCs are widely used in various industrial control scenarios due to their modular design, rich I/O expansion capabilities, and powerful network communication functions. This article aims to systematically explain the hardware composition, installation environment requirements, backplane and unit installation steps, power and I/O wiring specifications, as well as fault diagnosis and maintenance points of this series of PLCs, providing a complete and professional technical reference for on-site engineers.
System composition and hardware overview
The C200HX/HG/HE series PLC adopts a modular design, and the entire system is composed of multiple independent hardware units, which are physically and electrically connected through a backplane.
1.1 CPU rack and expansion I/O rack
The core of the system is the CPU rack, which consists of a CPU backplane, CPU units, power supply units, and various I/O units. Depending on the CPU model, the system can connect up to 2 or 3 expansion I/O racks, allowing for flexible expansion of the system's I/O points and functions.
CPU backplane: used for installing CPU units, power units, and I/O units. According to the required number of slots, models with 3 slots (C200HW-BC031), 5 slots (C200HW-BC051), 8 slots (C200HW-BC081-V1), or 10 slots (C200HW-BC101-V1) can be selected.
I/O Backboard: Used for expanding I/O racks, its model is similar to CPU Backboard, but marked with "BI", such as C200HW-BI031, C200HW-BI051, etc.
I/O connection cable: used to connect the CPU rack to the expansion I/O rack, or between expansion racks. Provide five lengths of 30cm, 70cm, 2m, 5m, and 10m, but the total length of all I/O connection cables in the same PLC system shall not exceed 12 meters.
1.2 Introduction to Key Units
1.2.1 CPU Unit
The CPU unit is the computational and control core of the system, and its performance parameters determine the processing capability of the system. The C200HX/HG/HE series offers multiple CPU models, with the main differences being user program capacity, data storage capacity, instruction processing speed, and maximum I/O points. For example, C200HE-CPU11-E/ZE provides a program capacity of 3.2K words with a basic instruction processing time of 0.3 µ s, while C200HX-CPU85-ZE provides a program capacity of 63.2K words with a basic instruction processing time of only 0.1 µ s and supports up to 1184 I/O.
There are multiple indicator lights on the front of the CPU unit to display the operating status:
RUN (green): The PLC lights up when running normally in RUN or MONITOR mode.
ERR (red): Blinking indicates non fatal errors, while constant light indicates fatal errors (at this time, the RUN indicator light will turn off and all output units' outputs will be cut off).
INH (orange): When the load cutoff position (SR 25215) is ON, it lights up, indicating that all outputs are disabled.
COMM (orange): It lights up when the CPU unit communicates through the peripheral port or RS-232C port.
The CPU unit is also equipped with a 6-digit DIP switch for configuring system startup behavior, including key settings such as program write protection, automatic memory box reading, and programming console language selection.
1.2.2 Power Supply Unit
The power unit provides stable DC power to all units on the rack. The C200HX/HG/HE series offers multiple power unit models to accommodate different input power conditions and output power requirements.
AC power supply unit: such as C200HW-PA204 (wide range 100-240VAC input, output 30W), C200HW-PA204R (with RUN output contact), C200HW-PA204C (with replacement notification function, displaying remaining life through a seven segment digital tube).
DC power supply unit: such as C200HW-PD024 (24VDC input, output 30W), C200HW-PD025 (24VDC input, output 40W).
The terminals on the back of the power unit include AC input (L1, L2/N), ground terminals (GR and LG), and DC output terminals (24VDC, only available for specific models). It is necessary to strictly follow the specifications for wiring and ensure that the grounding resistance is less than 100 Ω.
1.2.3 I/O Unit
The C200HX/HG/HE series offers a wide range of I/O units to meet the access requirements of different signal types.
Input units: including DC input units (such as C200H-ID211, 12-24VDC, 8 points), AC input units (such as C200H-IA12100-120VAC, 8 points), and AC-DC input units (such as C200H-IM211, 12-24VAC/DC, 8 points).
Output units: including relay output units (such as C200H-OC221, 2A 250VAC/24VDC, 8 points), transistor output units (such as C200H-OD411, 1A 12-48VDC, 8 points), and bidirectional thyristor output units (such as C200H-OA221, 1A 250VAC, 8 points).
In addition, the system also supports Group-2 high-density I/O units (such as C200H-ID216, 32 point 24VDC input) and high-density I/O units classified as special I/O units (such as C200H-ID501, 32 point TTL input), which are connected to external devices through 40 pin or 24 pin connectors, greatly improving I/O density.
