The Prosoft MVI56-PDPS is a communication module that allows Rockwell Automation ControlLogix processors to interface with PROFIBUS DP networks as a slave device. The module acts as a gateway between the ControlLogix backplane and a PROFIBUS DP network, enabling the Logix controller to exchange data with a PROFIBUS master (such as a Siemens PLC or DCS). This solution is ideal for integrating ControlLogix systems into existing PROFIBUS installations.

The MVI56-PDPS implements the PROFIBUS DP-V0 and DP-V1 standards, supporting cyclic data exchange, acyclic parameterization, and diagnostic reporting. The module responds to the PROFIBUS master as a standard DP slave, with a user-defined GSD file that describes the module's data structure. The module's internal processor handles the PROFIBUS protocol stack independently, offloading communication tasks from the ControlLogix processor.
The module is configured as a generic 1756 module in the ControlLogix I/O tree. Data is exchanged via block transfers (MSG instructions) or via scheduled data transfer using the module's input and output image. Prosoft provides ladder logic examples and Add-On Instructions (AOIs) to simplify data mapping between PROFIBUS I/O and controller tags. The module also supports a "Listen Only" mode for network monitoring without affecting bus communication.
Configuration is performed using Prosoft Configuration Builder (PCB) software, which allows setting of slave address, data mapping, and diagnostic parameters. The module includes an RS-232 debug port for firmware updates and on-the-fly diagnostics. Front panel LEDs indicate module status, PROFIBUS bus activity, and data exchange errors.
This module is used in applications where a ControlLogix must coexist with a PROFIBUS DP master, such as in automotive assembly lines, material handling, and process control systems. It is also used for retrofitting older PROFIBUS installations with newer Logix controllers without replacing the entire fieldbus infrastructure.
