Description

Schneider Electric BMXCPS2010 PLC Power Supply

The Schneider Electric BMXCPS2010 is a power supply module for the Modicon M340 programmable logic controller platform. Designed to mount in the leftmost slot of an M340 rack (BMX XBP series), this module converts a 24 V DC input to the regulated voltages required by the backplane and I/O modules. It provides a total output capacity of 2.3 A, sufficient for powering a CPU, several I/O modules, and communication modules. The BMXCPS2010 is part of the Modicon X80 I/O platform and is known for its high efficiency, compact size (36 mm width), and comprehensive protection features including overvoltage, overcurrent, and short-circuit protection.

Technical Specifications

The BMXCPS2010 accepts a 24 V DC input voltage with a range of 19.2 V to 28.8 V (including 10% ripple). The maximum input current is 1.8 A at 19.2 V. Output voltage is 24 V DC, regulated, with a total output current capacity of 2.3 A (maximum). This output is divided into two segments: the internal backplane supply (for CPU and rack I/O) and the external sensor supply (for field devices wired to I/O modules). The sensor supply output is fused and protected against overload. Output power is 55 W typical. Efficiency at rated load is > 88%. The module includes protection against overvoltage (output clamp at 30 V), overcurrent (hiccup mode auto-recovery), and short-circuit (foldback). The module also provides a "DC OK" relay contact (voltage-free) for remote monitoring. Indicators include a green LED for power good and a red LED for fault. Dimensions: 36 mm (W) × 105 mm (H) × 85 mm (D). Operating temperature: 0°C to 60°C. Storage: -40°C to 85°C. Protection rating: IP20.

Key Features

  • 24 V DC input (19.2 to 28.8 V) with wide tolerance

  • 2.3 A output capacity for backplane and I/O sensor supply

  • High efficiency (>88%) minimizes heat generation

  • Integrated overvoltage, overcurrent, and short-circuit protection

  • DC OK relay contact for remote power status monitoring

  • Removable screw terminal block for input and sensor output wiring

  • Occupies one slot (36 mm width) in M340 rack

  • CE, UL, CSA certified, RoHS compliant

  • Compatible with all Modicon M340 and X80 I/O modules

Power Distribution

The BMXCPS2010 supplies power to the M340 backplane via the rack's internal bus. The backplane distributes 5 V and 24 V to the CPU and I/O modules. The CPU consumption varies depending on the model, but typical consumption for a BMX P34 CPU is about 0.5 A at 5 V. I/O modules draw power from the 5 V and 24 V rails. The total current drawn from the 24 V supply cannot exceed 2.3 A. For systems with high I/O counts, additional power supplies may be required in a separate rack or as an external power source for sensor supplies. The module also provides a separate 24 V DC output (sensor supply) that can be used to power field devices. This output is protected by an internal resettable fuse; if the load exceeds 2.3 A, the output shuts down and automatically recovers when the overload is removed.

Installation and Wiring

The BMXCPS2010 must be installed in the leftmost slot of the M340 rack (slot 0). It connects to the backplane via the rack's power connector. The 24 V DC input and sensor supply output are wired to a removable screw terminal block. Use 0.5 to 2.5 mm² (AWG 20-14) copper wire. Connect the positive to + (terminal A) and negative to – (terminal B). The ground terminal (earth) is provided for shielding but is not required for operation. The sensor supply output terminals (OUT+ and OUT-) are available on the same terminal block. The DC OK relay contacts (normally open) are on terminals D and E; they close when the output voltage is within specification. For systems with redundant power supplies, a second BMXCPS2010 can be installed in a separate rack, but the M340 does not support hot-standby power redundancy.

Applications

The BMXCPS2010 is used in all Modicon M340 PLC systems where the CPU and I/O modules are installed in a single rack (BMX XBP 0400/0600/0800). Typical applications include small to medium-sized packaging machines, conveyors, material handling equipment, HVAC systems, and water treatment controls. The supply's 2.3 A capacity is sufficient for a full rack of modules (e.g., BMX P34 CPU, 8 digital input modules, 8 digital output modules, and a communication module). For larger systems requiring additional I/O, expansion racks must have their own power supplies (another BMXCPS2010). The module is also used in redundant I/O architectures where two M340 racks are synchronized.

Maintenance and Diagnostics

The BMXCPS2010 has no user-serviceable parts inside. The front panel provides two LEDs: a green "PWR" LED indicates that the output is within specification; a red "ERR" LED indicates an overload, overvoltage, or overtemperature fault. If the red LED illuminates, check the total current draw of the modules and the wiring for short circuits. The DC OK relay can be wired to a PLC input to monitor supply status. If the power supply fails, the entire module must be replaced. The supply should be cleaned periodically using compressed air to remove dust from the ventilation slots. The average mean time between failures (MTBF) is over 500,000 hours at 40°C.

Environmental and Compliance

The BMXCPS2010 is CE, UL 61010-1, CSA C22.2 No. 61010-1, and ATEX Zone 2 certified. It is RoHS compliant. Operating temperature: 0°C to 60°C (derate by 2% per °C above 50°C). Storage temperature: -40°C to 85°C. Humidity: 10-95% non-condensing. Vibration resistance: 2g (10-55 Hz). The module is rated IP20 and must be installed in a control cabinet with IP20 or higher protection.

Conclusion

The Schneider Electric BMXCPS2010 power supply module provides a compact, reliable power source for Modicon M340 PLC systems. Its 2.3 A output capacity, high efficiency, and built-in protection features ensure stable operation of the CPU and I/O modules. The DC OK relay and diagnostic LEDs simplify troubleshooting, making it a suitable choice for industrial control applications.
