EATON MP-4000 motor protection relay

Product Overview

The Eaton MP-4000 motor protection relay is a multifunctional microcomputer based relay that integrates protection, control, diagnosis, and measurement, designed specifically for medium voltage motors. On the basis of inheriting the leading protection and control functions of the MP-3000 series, it has added a voltage transformer (VT) input interface, supporting more comprehensive voltage protection and energy measurement functions, such as undervoltage/overvoltage, negative sequence voltage, power factor, frequency, etc.

MP-4000 is not only a protective relay, but also a complete motor management unit. It helps industrial users achieve comprehensive control of motor operation status by integrating multiple communication protocols (such as Modbus RTU, DeviceNet), advanced data recording functions, and user-friendly interface.


Core technical features

1. Intel-1-Trip Intelligent Overload Protection Algorithm

One of the core highlights of the MP-4000 is Eaton's proprietary Intel-1-Trip overload protection algorithm. This algorithm can adaptively adjust the tripping characteristics based on the actual temperature of the motor (when connected to RTD through an optional URTD module), thereby achieving a balance between precise protection and maximizing motor capacity utilization.

Users only need to input the data provided by the motor manufacturer, and the MP-4000 can automatically generate an optimized protection curve suitable for the motor, without the need for programmers or engineers to intervene. The built-in "Help" menu of the device further simplifies the operation process, truly achieving "ready to use".

2. Leading voltage sag tolerance capability

Disturbances in power quality have become a norm in modern industrial facilities. The MP-4000 has excellent voltage sag tolerance (SRT) and can operate continuously for 20 cycles, easily handling most power quality events. It can also withstand typical 15 to 20 cycles of reclosing operation without resetting, ensuring that the motor continues to run even when the "light flashes", avoiding unnecessary shutdowns caused by brief voltage fluctuations.


Advanced Diagnosis and Data Management

1. Advanced event recording and activity monitoring

The MP-4000 is equipped with a powerful data recording system that continuously monitors the current, temperature, and operating status of the motor. The event log includes:

The last 20 tripping or alarm events;

The last 100 motor incidents;

Record the exact time and date of the last 4 launches.

These data can be displayed locally or accessed remotely through Power Xpert Server Core software, helping operations personnel quickly locate the root cause of faults, reduce downtime, and improve system availability.

2. Motor Start Profile Intelligent Start Control

MP-4000 Motor Start Profile ™ The function provides intelligent start logic control to prevent the motor from restarting when there is insufficient cooling or too many starts. This function is suitable for both full voltage start and step-down start modes, and can be used to develop protection parameters when motor data is missing, especially for the protection upgrade of old motors.

Safety and environmental adaptability

1. UL 1053 Ground Fault Protection Certification

The MP-4000 complies with UL 1053 ground fault protection standards, eliminating the need for additional ground fault relays, saving wiring, space, and costs. Its built-in ground fault protection function fully meets the safety requirements of the North American market for microcomputer relays.

2. Three proof coating protection with standard configuration

Eaton is the only manufacturer that comes standard with a three proof coating in motor protection relays. This coating has excellent dielectric properties and can effectively resist the influence of harsh environmental factors such as humidity, corrosive gases, dust, etc., ensuring the long-term stable operation of equipment under harsh industrial conditions.


Maintenance and operational convenience

1. Armed/Isarmed maintenance mode

During regular testing, parameter modification, or other maintenance operations, operation and maintenance personnel often worry about accidentally triggering trips. The Armed/Shielded function of MP-4000 perfectly solves this problem: in the "Disarm" state, the relay will indicate the tripping condition but will not actually cut off the motor, ensuring a safe and worry free maintenance process.

2. Drawer style chassis design

The MP-4000 can be equipped with a quick detachable drawer style chassis, which supports unplugging relays for testing or replacement without interrupting operation. This design greatly enhances the maintainability and continuity of the system, especially for critical processes that are sensitive to downtime.


Communication and System Integration

The MP-4000 fully supports Eaton's Power Xpert Architecture, which is a core component of Eaton's PowerChain solution. Through Power Xpert Architecture, users can view the power system as a strategic asset and achieve monitoring, control, and management throughout its entire lifecycle.

Communication interface and protocol

Modbus RTU: a widely supported industrial communication protocol;

DeviceNet: a network suitable for device level control;

Power Xpert Server Core software: converts raw data into visual information, supporting operational decision-making, predictive maintenance, fault diagnosis, and reliability improvement.

Users can choose the integration method according to their actual needs: from small-scale standalone monitoring (through Power Xpert gateway and web interface) to enterprise level system integration (through Power Xpert Server Core software), MP-4000 can seamlessly integrate.


Economic MD-3000 option

For large motors that require higher levels of protection, Eaton also offers MD-3000 motor differential protection relays, designed in conjunction with MP-4000, specifically for large motors to provide more refined differential protection functions.

For most standard motors, the MP-4000 itself has integrated comprehensive protection and control functions, and users do not need to pay for infrequently used functions, truly achieving "on-demand configuration and economic efficiency".
