It is a very informative text, and it may take a while to sift through all the data and historical tidbits. It's also, frankly, a depressing book. Although the book describes some moments of effective resistance, it does not offer a hopeful vision of the future. For those already exhausted by apocalyptic visions and the existential fear triggered by isolation, this book may overwhelm you like a baleful package of straw. But the sober, sober analysis and stories about emotions it offers are worth persevering through the bleak atmosphere of "awful." You can't change anything until you see it for what it is. And Shoestring is a wonderful microscope: it's not its fault that the slides it shows us are so unpleasant.
