China's shipbuilding international market share has ranked first in the world for 13 consecutive years

The economic operation of China's shipbuilding industry in 2022 is stable and good on the whole. The shipbuilding market share has remained a global leader, new breakthroughs have been made in high-end equipment, the resilience and safety of the industrial chain and supply chain have been improved, the destocking of Marine engineering equipment has achieved remarkable results, and the quality of economic operations has significantly improved. Specifically, there are six characteristics:

First, the international market share continues to lead, and the competitiveness of backbone enterprises is enhanced. In 2022, China's shipbuilding international market share has ranked first in the world for 13 consecutive years, and its position as a shipbuilding country has been further consolidated. China's shipbuilding completions, new orders and hand-held orders accounted for 47.3%, 55.2% and 49.0% of the world's total deadweight tons, respectively. China's backbone ship enterprises maintain strong international competitiveness, respectively, six enterprises entered the world's shipbuilding completion volume, new orders and hand-held orders in the top 10.

Second, new breakthroughs have been made in high-end equipment, and green-powered ships have grown rapidly. In 2022, China's shipping enterprises continue to increase research and development efforts, and make new breakthroughs in the field of high-tech ships and offshore engineering equipment. High-end ship type to achieve batch delivery. Marine engineering equipment such as 100,000 ton smart fishery large aquaculture ship was delivered. Green powered ships accounted for 49.1% of new orders in the year, the highest level in history.

Third, the application of domestic supporting products has accelerated, and the security level of the industrial chain has been enhanced. Fourth, the demand for offshore oil and gas equipment is expanding, and the effect of "destocking" is obvious. In 2022, the high volatility of international oil prices has led to the expansion of global offshore oil and gas equipment market demand, and domestic offshore engineering equipment enterprises have seized the opportunity to achieve positive results in "destocking".

Fifth, seize the favorable opportunity of the market, and the industry efficiency has improved. In 2022, shipping enterprises reduce costs and increase efficiency by strengthening the plan management of shipbuilding nodes, implementing intelligent transformation of production lines, and strengthening cost management. From January to November, the efficiency of shipping enterprises was significantly improved, and the profit margin of main income rose to 3.0%.

Sixth, the effect of structural adjustment is obvious, and the quality of new ship orders continues to improve. In 2022, China's shipping enterprises will consolidate their leading position in the market of advantageous ship types and consolidate the foundation of new ship orders, and a total of 12 new ship types in China among the 18 major ship types in the world will rank first in the world. In particular, major breakthroughs were made in the field of large LNG carriers, and the international market share of new orders for large LNG carriers in the year exceeded 30% for the first time. China Shipping Association believes that China's shipping industry has been in a new cycle of recovery. In 2023, China's shipbuilding completion will exceed 42 million deadweight tons, the order volume of new ships will be about 40 to 50 million deadweight tons, and the order volume of hand-held ships will remain at about 100 million deadweight tons.

On the situation and challenges facing the development of China's shipping industry in 2023, the China Shipping Association gives four suggestions:

First, the word is stable, to ensure the delivery of the ship to implement safety measures. China Shipping Association predicts that in the next 2 to 3 years in 2023, China's shipping enterprises will usher in the peak of shipping. From 2023 to 2024, it is the centralized delivery period of large container ships. From 2025 to 2026, it is the concentrated delivery period of large LNG carriers.

The China Shipping Association recommends that shipping enterprises comprehensively strengthen production planning and material supporting management, adhere to quality first and safety first, and ensure that ships with orders are delivered on time. Fully implement the main responsibility of production safety in enterprises, strengthen the management of production safety in the whole process, ensure the orderly progress of production, and protect the safety of employees.

The second is to improve the quality and efficiency, grasp the rhythm to improve the quality of orders. In the past two years, the global new shipbuilding market has remained active, and the market demand for different ship types has shown wheel development, and the price of new ships such as large container ships has increased significantly, and the price difference of the same type of ships has reached tens of millions of dollars in a year.

The China Shipping Association suggests that shipping enterprises strengthen the dynamic tracking of the development of the international shipping and shipbuilding market, avoid blindly following the trend, combine their own holding of ship orders and ship location arrangements, under the premise of ensuring the continuity of enterprise production, optimize business strategies, grasp the rhythm of orders, and further improve the quality of new orders.

The third is to prevent risks, strengthen research and judgment to take countermeasures. At present, the external environment facing the shipping industry is becoming more complex and uncertain. Since the fourth quarter of 2022, the RMB exchange rate has continued to appreciate against the US dollar; The price of imported iron ore reached $116 a tonne; The fluctuation range of new ship prices increased, the composite index of new ship prices showed "stagflation", and the prices of individual ship types fell.

The China Shipping Association recommends that shipping enterprises strengthen market research and evaluation, adhere to the risk-neutral concept, strengthen upstream and downstream cooperation in the industrial chain, and control risks such as raw material costs and exchange rate changes by signing long-term procurement agreements with steel enterprises and signing long-term foreign exchange settlement agreements with financial institutions.

In addition, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) existing ship energy efficiency index and ship operation carbon intensity index rating and other new rules come into effect, and will be adopted in July 2023 revised IMO ship greenhouse gas emission reduction strategy, China Shipping Association suggests that relevant ship companies and research institutions pay close attention to, early research to take countermeasures.

Fourth, explore and innovate to resolve the contradiction of insufficient human resources. At present, the contradiction between the rapid growth of China's ship production and the shortage of labor supply is becoming increasingly prominent, which has become an important factor restricting the high-quality development of the industry.
