ADLINK MXE-200 Series Fanless Embedded Industrial Control Computer: Complete Manual for Industrial Site Deployment and System Debugging
In the scenarios of intelligent manufacturing, intelligent transportation, facility management and edge computing of the Internet of Things (IoT), strict requirements are put forward for the volume, power consumption, reliability and scalability of industrial personal computers. ADLINK MXE-200 series (including MXE-200 and MXE-200i) is an ultra compact fanless embedded platform based on Intel Atom ™ SoC processor (E3845/E3826), integrated with dual GbE, USB 3.0, dual serial ports, optional isolated DI/O, dual mini PCIe slots and USIM card holder, supports wide temperature operation from -20 ° C to 70 ° C and 100G impact resistance, is an ideal choice for industrial edge computing. However, hardware installation, BIOS tuning, watchdog configuration, and IoT gateway setup in on-site deployment often become challenges for engineers. This article is based on the official user manual of MXE-200 and combines practical experience to provide you with a complete technical guide from unboxing to stable operation.
Chapter 1: Unpacking Inspection and Mechanical Installation
1.1 Open box inspection
The MXE-200 package includes: host unit, DIN-RAIL/wall mounting bracket, installation screw kit, quick start guide, and ADLINK All in One driver DVD. When opening the box, be sure to check for any damage to the shipping carton. If there is any damage, contact the dealer immediately. All operations must be carried out in an anti-static environment, avoiding contact with the gold fingers of the board.
1.2 Mechanical dimensions and installation methods
The MXE-200 has dimensions of 120mm (width) x 100mm (depth) x 55mm (height) and weighs only 650g. It supports two installation methods:
DIN-RAIL rail installation: Use the included DIN-RAIL bracket and 2 M4 screws to fix it to the back of the chassis according to the spacing of the bracket holes, and then clip it into the standard 35mm DIN rail.
Wall mounted installation: Using the same bracket, fix it to the wall or equipment panel with screws.
Attention should be paid during installation: the heat source components (CPU, PCH) are located on the left side of the system, and the heat sink is in direct contact with the housing through a thermal pad. To ensure heat dissipation efficiency, leave at least 2 inches (5cm) of clearance at the top to avoid obstructing natural convection.
1.3 Power connection and polarity confirmation
The MXE-200 has a built-in 6-36V DC wide voltage input and uses a 3-pin pluggable connector (GND, V -, V+). Key Warning: The manual clearly emphasizes that "Before providing DC power to the MXE-200, ensure that the voltage and polarity provided are compatible with the DC input. Improper input voltage and/or polarity can be responsible for system damage." When wiring, it is necessary to confirm the positive and negative poles, and it is recommended to use a 40W or higher power adapter (considering high temperature derating).
Chapter 2: Internal Module Installation - Mini PCIe, mSATA, and USIM
The MXE-200 provides two mini PCIe slots (Slot1 and Slot2) internally, where Slot1 can be switched to mSATA or mini PCIe mode through jumpers, Slot2 is fixed as mini PCIe (supporting 3G/4G/WiFi/BT), and there is also a USIM slot for cellular communication.
2.1 mSATA/mini PCIe mode switching
The jumper of Slot1 (located on the bottom of the motherboard) is set to mSATA mode by default (pin 1-2 short circuited). If you need to install WiFi/Bluetooth or other mini PCIe modules, you need to move the jumper cap to position 2-3 (mini PCIe mode). Please refer to Table 1-8 in the manual for specific details.
2.2 Module Physical Installation Steps
Unscrew the bottom 8 screws and remove the bottom cover.
Insert the mSATA or mini PCIe module into the corresponding slot at an angle of approximately 30 °, paying attention to the anti mistake notch.
Press down on the module until it is level, and secure it with two M2.5 × L5 screws.
If installing a 3G/4G module, the SIM card needs to be inserted into the USIM slot (with the contacts facing downwards and the notch facing outwards).
Attention: When installing the wireless module, it is necessary to connect the antenna in advance (additional purchase required), and the antenna interface should be located in the reserved hole on the front panel or side panel.
2.3 Optional GPS module power supply
The motherboard provides two sets of power supply interfaces, DC 3.3V (CN20) and DC 5V (CN19), designed specifically for GPS modules, with a maximum of 1A per set. If an external GPS is used, the corresponding interface can be selected according to the module voltage.
2.4 External expansion power supply/reset/indicator light
The MXE-200i model provides internal pin headers (CN5 for power button, CN4 for reset button), which can be used for external remote switches or chassis panel buttons. The pin definitions are detailed in Table 1-10 and can be used for remote hard reset or remote power on.
