EATON VISA series vacuum arc extinguishing chamber: core technology analysis in the medium voltage field

Principles and core advantages of vacuum arc extinguishing technology

The basic principle of a vacuum arc extinguishing chamber is to seal a pair of contacts in a high vacuum environment, utilizing the excellent insulation strength and arc extinguishing ability of vacuum to quickly cut off the arc when the current crosses zero. Compared with traditional oil or SF6 gas arc extinguishing methods, vacuum arc extinguishing has the following significant advantages:

2.1 Environmentally friendly, with no greenhouse gas emissions

Unlike SF6 gas (a potent greenhouse gas), vacuum arc extinguishing chambers do not emit any toxic or greenhouse gases when interrupting the current. Its arc extinguishing medium is only vacuum, which has zero burden on the environment and complies with increasingly strict environmental regulations worldwide.

2.2 Long lifespan and maintenance free operation

The careful design of the contact material effectively controls arc erosion, resulting in an extremely long contact life. At the same time, hard contact materials hardly undergo fusion welding in vacuum, making them very suitable for high current repeated breaking applications. Due to the vacuum environment, oxygen and moisture are eliminated, and no oxide or corrosion layer is formed on the contact surface, further ensuring long-term contact stability.

2.3 High dielectric strength and compact design

The dielectric strength of vacuum is much higher than that of atmospheric air or SF6, so the contact opening distance can be designed to be smaller, making the entire arc extinguishing chamber compact and conducive to the miniaturization of switchgear. The application of solid insulation technology further enhances the external dielectric performance and meets the requirements of higher voltage levels.

2.4 Low current cutoff value and low overvoltage

Eaton vacuum arc extinguishing chambers have a low average cutoff value, resulting in extremely low transient overvoltages during disconnection. Therefore, there is usually no need to install additional overvoltage suppressors, simplifying system design.

2.5 No noise and no external flashover

All arcs are sealed inside the vacuum bubble, and there is no noise or flash leakage during switch operation, ensuring the safety of operators and the tranquility of the environment.

3.1 Global Citizens

The VISA series strictly follows global mainstream standards such as GB, IEC, IEEE, with electrical parameters covering voltage levels from 12kV to 40.5kV, breaking capacity from 16kA to 50kA, and rated current from 630A to 3150A. 3.2 Plug and play
