The ABB CMC 70 is a multifunction communication controller designed to act as a protocol converter, data concentrator, and gateway in substation automation systems, industrial plants, and utility networks. It bridges the gap between intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) using different communication protocols and higher-level control centers, ensuring seamless data exchange and system interoperability.
The CMC 70 supports a wide range of industry-standard protocols, including IEC 61850 (client/server and GOOSE), IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, DNP3 (serial and TCP/IP), Modbus RTU/ASCII/TCP, and PROFIBUS DP. It can act as a gateway between these protocols, allowing legacy devices with serial interfaces to be integrated into modern IEC 61850 substations. The device also supports protocol conversion between different versions of the same protocol (e.g., DNP3 serial to DNP3 LAN).
As a data concentrator, the CMC 70 collects real-time data from multiple IEDs (protection relays, meters, controllers) and presents it to SCADA systems via a single point of access. It can perform data processing functions such as scaling, deadband filtering, threshold monitoring, and logic calculations using an embedded programmable logic engine. This reduces the processing load on the SCADA master and improves system performance.
Beyond protocol conversion, the CMC 70 offers local control capabilities. It includes a built-in web server for remote monitoring and configuration, and supports time synchronization via SNTP or IRIG-B. The device can also act as a substation clock master, distributing time to connected IEDs. It features event and alarm logging with non-volatile storage, enabling post-event analysis.
Processor: High-performance 32-bit RISC CPU with ample memory for large configurations.
Communication ports: Typically 2 to 4 serial ports (RS232/RS485), 2 Ethernet ports (10/100Base-TX), and optional fiber optic ports.
Digital I/O: Up to 8 digital inputs and 6 relay outputs for local interlocking and status indication.
Power supply: Wide-range 24-250 V DC or 100-240 V AC, with redundant power options.
Mounting: 19" rack or DIN rail mount, with IP20 protection.
The CMC 70 is configured using ABB's intuitive PCM600 tool or a web-based interface. It supports drag-and-drop mapping of signals between protocols, simplifying engineering. Firmware upgrades can be performed remotely via FTP or HTTP. The device also supports SNMP for network management integration.
Substation gateway for connecting IEDs to SCADA (RTU replacement).
Protocol converter in hybrid substations with both IEC 61850 and legacy devices.
Data concentrator for wind farms, solar plants, and industrial power distribution.
Remote terminal unit (RTU) for distribution automation.
The ABB CMC 70 multifunction communication controller is a robust, scalable solution that simplifies communication architecture, reduces integration costs, and future-proofs automation systems.
