The POINT I/O counter module acts as a signal conditioning device and functional block (i.e., counter) between the user process signal that mounts the base seat and the POINTBus backplane that contains the command information. It has three main functional blocks, namely custom digital volume I/O interface, counter ASIC and microprocessor.

The counter module receives feedback from the following devices:

• Encoder (single-ended or differential)• Pulse generator

• Mechanical limit switch

• Frequency not exceeding 1 MHz

The module returns a count value or frequency in the form of a 24-bit binary number (0 to 16,777,215) expressed as a 32-bit word. Each counter has a user-selectable preset value and a corresponding cycle value.

The counter module works in the following modes.

• Counter mode - Read input single-phase pulse and return binary count value.

• Encoder mode - Reads the input two-phase orthogonal pulse and returns the binary count value. • Cycle/frequency mode - Calculates the number of internal clocks over a period of time, returning the frequency value (1734-VHSC24 and 1734-VHSC5 outputs are only updated at the end of this period).

Continuous/frequency mode - Calculates the number of internal clocks over a period of time, returning the frequency value (1734-VHSC24 and 1734-VHSC5 outputs are updated throughout this period).

• Frequency measurement mode - Read the number of pulses during the sampling period and return the frequency value.

• Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) mode - generates a pulse width modulation signal (used only

1734-VHSC24 and 1734-VHSC5).

Pulse generator mode - Generates a pulse of a specific width, returns the width and the number of triggers (for 1734-VHSC24 and 1734-VHSC5 only).

The mode of operation of the counter and encoder is basically the same. The difference lies in the type of feedback (single-phase versus two-phase) in the counting direction (plus or minus). In encoder mode, it is expected that the B-phase will be transformed in order to count continuously in one direction. In counter mode, the B-phase input may remain at a static level. All operating modes are selected by writing the corresponding configuration data to the module.
