Safety Logic Solving Function

The Triconex 3708EN serves as the central intelligence unit in a Safety Instrumented System (SIS), responsible for executing safety logic that protects people, assets, and the environment. Unlike standard process controllers that optimize operations, this safety controller is dedicated to taking predefined safety actions when process conditions exceed safe limits. It continuously monitors inputs from safety field devices (via I/O modules), processes this information according to pre-programmed safety logic, and commands final elements (valves, breakers, etc.) to move processes to a safe state when necessary. The controller's primary design objective is maximum reliability - it must neither fail to act when required (dangerous failure) nor act when not required (spurious trip). This balance between safety availability and safety integrity makes it suitable for the most critical safety applications.


Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) Technology

The 3708EN's core innovation is its Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) architecture. The controller contains three independent, identical processing channels operating in parallel. Each channel has its own processor, memory, and I/O communication. All three channels execute identical application logic simultaneously. A sophisticated hardware and software voting system compares the outputs of all three channels. The system only produces an output when at least two of the three channels agree (2-out-of-3 voting). This architecture provides continuous fault tolerance - if one channel fails, the system continues to operate correctly while diagnosing the fault. The TMR design effectively addresses both random hardware failures and certain systematic failures, providing an optimal balance between high safety integrity and high availability for safety-critical applications.
