Advanced Signal Integrity
The TRICONEX 3806E is essential for modulating control within a safety system. While many safety modules handle simple binary (on/off) signals, the 3806E manages complex 4-20 mA loops. To maintain SIL 3 integrity, the module employs an advanced TMR design where each output channel is driven by three independent sub-circuits. These circuits are tied together in a proprietary voting arrangement that eliminates single points of failure.
This ensures that if a component in one output leg fails, the other two legs continue to provide the correct current to the field device, preventing process upsets or accidental shutdowns.
Functional Characteristics
Channel Isolation: Each of the six channels is galvanically isolated to prevent ground loops and protect the system backplane from field transients.
Loop-Back Diagnostics: The module continuously monitors the actual current flowing in the loop and compares it to the commanded value.
Fail-Safe State: Can be configured to hold the last value or go to a predefined "safe" value in the event of a total system communication loss.
High Resolution: Provides fine granularity in signal output, ensuring smooth control of critical modulating valves.
Applications in Critical Infrastructure
The 3806E is frequently used in Boiler Management Systems (BMS) for fuel valve modulation and in Turbine Control Systems for speed regulation. Because these loops are critical to plant stability, the 3806E's ability to remain online during a component failure is invaluable. Maintenance is simplified through the module's hot-swap capability, allowing for the replacement of a module without shutting down the associated process loops. This combination of precision and availability makes it a cornerstone of modern industrial safety design.
