Thermocouple Basics A thermocouple is formed when two different metals are electrically connected to each other. The voltage produced by the thermocouple is proportional to the temperature of the junction. The voltage is small; A microvolt can represent a lot of degrees. Measuring the voltage produced by a thermocouple, compensating for additional nodes, and then linearizing the measurement results are the basis for measuring temperature with a thermocouple. When connecting the thermocouple to the SM 1231 thermocouple signal module, two different metal wires need to be connected to the signal connector of the module. The position where these two different metal wires are connected to each other forms the sensor thermocouple. At the position where these two different metal wires are connected to the signal connector, two more thermocouples are formed. The connector temperature will cause a voltage that will be added to the voltage generated by the sensor thermocouple. If this voltage is not corrected, the resulting reported temperature will deviate from the sensor temperature. Cold end compensation is used to compensate the connector thermocouple. Thermocouple meters are based on the reference end temperature (usually zero degrees Celsius). Cold end compensation is used to correct the connector temperature to zero degrees Celsius. Cold end compensation eliminates the increased voltage of the connector thermocouple. The temperature of the module is measured internally, then converted to a numerical value and added to the sensor conversion. The corrected sensor conversion values are then linearized using a thermocouple meter. For optimal cold end compensation, the thermocouple module must be installed in a temperature-stable environment. Slow changes in module ambient temperature (below 0.1° C/min) that comply with module specifications can be correctly compensated. The flow of air through the module can also cause cold end compensation errors. For better cold end error compensation, an external iso hot terminal block can be used. Thermocouple modules can use 0° C reference value or 50° C reference value terminal blocks.
