China's information technology industry is developing vigorously with strong impetus

The fourth National Economic census shows that in the past five years, China's information technology industry has developed vigorously, the industrial scale has expanded rapidly, the industrial structure has been optimized, the new generation of information technology has made continuous breakthroughs, and the engine role of economic and social development and the improvement of people's quality of life has been strengthened. The information technology industry has developed into a leading, strategic and basic industry to promote the high-quality development of the national economy.


First, the scale of the information technology industry continues to expand

The number of information technology companies has multiplied. By the end of 2018, the number of corporate enterprises in the information technology industry, including the four major industries of computer, communications and other electronic equipment manufacturing, telecommunications, radio and television and satellite transmission services, Internet and related services, and software and information technology services, had reached 1.047 million, an increase of 2.6 times over the end of 2013. Its assets totaled 26.9 trillion yuan, an increase of 98.8% over the end of 2013; Its operating income for the year was 18.5 trillion yuan, an increase of 62.7 percent over 2013.

The manufacturing capacity of electronic products has been continuously improved. By the end of 2018, the number of legal enterprises in the computer, communications and other electronic equipment manufacturing industry was 134,000, an increase of 81.8% over the end of 2013; Its assets totaled 11.7 trillion yuan, an increase of 1.0 times over the end of 2013; Its operating income for the year was 11.5 trillion yuan, an increase of 40.6% over 2013. From a worldwide perspective, most of the electronic communication products represented by mobile phones and computers are manufactured in China.

The software industry is developing rapidly. While the "hardware" industry is growing fast, the software industry is growing faster. By the end of 2018, the number of legal persons in the software and information technology service industry was 768,000, an increase of 3.2 times over the end of 2013; Assets totaled 6.7 trillion yuan, an increase of 1.6 times; Its operating income for the year was 3.4 trillion yuan, an increase of 1.7 times over 2013.

The Internet industry is expanding by spurt. By the end of 2018, the number of legal persons in the Internet and related service industries was 120,000, an increase of 3.8 times over the end of 2013; Assets totaled 2.6 trillion yuan, an increase of 4.4 times; Its operating income for the year was 1.7 trillion yuan, an increase of 5.5 times over 2013. The Internet and related services have become one of the fastest growing industries in the development of the national economy.

The development of the telecommunications industry has reached a new level. By the end of 2018, there were 25,000 legal enterprises in the telecommunications, radio, television and satellite transmission services, a 1.2 times increase over the end of 2013. Assets totaled 5.9 trillion yuan, up 25.7%; Its operating income for the year was 1.9 trillion yuan, an increase of 10.2% over 2013. China ranks first in the world in the number of telephone users, the number of fixed broadband users, the number of mobile phone base stations, and the length of optical cable lines. In 2018, Beidou began to provide global services; In 2019, 5G was officially put into commercial use, and the telecommunications industry has continued to develop steadily and is moving to a new level.

Second, the structure of the information technology industry has been continuously improved

In the past five years, China's information technology industry has undergone profound changes, the industrial status has been continuously improved, the industrial structure has been continuously optimized, and the industrial development has been expanding into service and network.

The proportion of the information technology industry in the national economy has increased. In 2018, the added value of the information technology industry accounted for 5.8% of the GDP, 1.2 percentage points higher than that in 2013. At the end of 2018, the number of enterprises, total assets and operating income in the information technology industry accounted for the proportion of secondary and tertiary industries to different degrees than that at the end of 2013.

The information technology industry is expanding from manufacturing to service. The information technology industry is both a manufacturing industry and a service industry. In terms of the proportion of manufacturing and service industries in the information technology industry, by the end of 2018, the number of corporate enterprises in the information transmission, software and information technology service industries, including the three major industries of telecommunications, radio, television and satellite transmission services, Internet and related services, and software and information technology services, accounted for 87.2% of the information technology industry. An increase of 12.3 percentage points over 2013; The annual operating income accounted for 37.9%, an increase of 9.7 percentage points over 2013, while the proportion of computer, communications and other electronic equipment manufacturing declined correspondingly.
